what this forum shows everyone is that we all love and need to be inspired by other flute players and musicians, don't be discouraged by great young flute players, be inspired by them, I know I am

Schoolgirl,
Here's some Galway recordings that can give you some direction on what to sound like:
http://www.thegalwaynetwork.com/page1.htm

Go to the right of his picture where it says Audio files and then below that "Sir James Live in concert" and browse around.

I recommend checking out a UK flute player and composer named Ian Clarke. He is phenominal!!! I have his CD and listen to it constantly. He is definitely in my top 3 list. I'd love to hear him in a live concert.

If you like flute as the feature instrument in world music, check out some of these links:

Klezmer - http://www.klezmerflute.com/CD/listen.html

Irish - http://store.artistdirect.com/nad/music/artist/card/0,,551189,00.html (he actually plays a wooden flute backwards... and probably better than I play the usual way!)

Latin - http://www.mp3.com/albums/625482/summary.html

Good stuff. All take turns in my CD player and iPod, along with Hubert Laws and Herbie Mann.

I love Galway too! Although he can overdo it at times but that's what I like sometimes!

1. Galway
2. Rhonda Larson
3. Flute player next to me in my community band!

Here's a site comparing several famous flute players. Galway's tone is the best but the techniques sounds better on the other flutists although it's hard to tell, but definitely Galway's tone stands out.

My three favourite flautists (when did the "a" get dropped anyway? somewhere over the Atlantic I guess!)would be:

1. Ian Anderson
2. Ian Anderson
2. Ian Anderson

I am therefore, a heathen who stumbled into the wrong forum! Please forgive me, you do seem like a friendly bunch, and I have picked up some great advice during my first few weeks of huffing and puffing elementary riffs.

Yours, Bill from Bonny Scotland

Ahhh, Bill from bonnie Scotland. You are very welcome to stumble about this forum for a time.
The A is really only used in foreign countries where the "flaut" players live. Some of us other former heathens (now called Yahoos) across the pond attempt to perform on the flute and therefore call ourselves flutists.

So, you have named Ian Anderson as number 1, 2 and 2. Whom would be number 3. Maybe I'd guess it would be that guy named Anderson, Ian ?

Bill, don't be shy. We love to have new comers. You will fing that their is a lot of variety here and a lot of us like different things and don't always agree on everything. That is what makes it so much fun.
