Trying to start the flute, any help?    12:39 on Sunday, April 9, 2006

Hello, I have been playing the violin, cello, and piano, for many years, and I want to start the flute. I've been trying to find a website with a flute fingering chart, but with every chart I've found, the chart confuses me a lot. If anyone knows of a site that is simple and helpful please respond. Thankyou.

Hi Sotumariku,

Here is a basic flute fingering chart:
http://www.gemeinhardt.com/pdf/fluteFingering.pdf

You will also find extensive fingering options here:

Thanks, for the charts. And sorry for overlooking the one here in 8notes. :p

Tomorrow I'll be buying a beginner's book for the flute, so that'll probably help.

anyway, thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

Hey, StephenK, I tried out the chart that you posted up and it doesn't really seem right. When I try to play a D [natural] it ends up sounding like a C# or some other note. It may be something I'm doing wrong but I'm pretty sure I'm doing what the chart is telling me to do.

I'm probably just gonna end up figuring out the notes by myself and making my own little chart. :\

D fingerings should be okay, make sure your right pinky isn't touching any keys. If you hit the C# key on the footjoint... that would cause a C# to pop out in 1st and 2nd octave.

D1 all fingers down on both hands except for the pinkies of both hands.

D2 same, but you raise your first index finger.

D3 is only left hand thumb and 2nd/3rd finger depressed.

Alright, thanks for that bit of info, StephenK.

And Micron, it could be, I'll ask my orchestra teacher about it [he also plays the flute, and helps me sometimes with it in the mornings before school.] Thanks.

I'm starting to get a handle on it, I think. Thanks for all the help and advice, everyone.
