hey, you high schoolers! lets see how many of you guys have this problem: BAND DRAMA!

do any of your fellow section mates get jealous of you because youre better then they are? so they develop a mutual dislike for you (common among underclassmen vs. uppclassmen)?

post your views on this if you would. its far too common here in my small town, especially with me. and im not happy with it. im not exactly pleased with the idea of going out of my way to make everyone happy, either.

OH! I KNOW! last year, as a freshman, i was sitting tied for first chair in our highest band with this senior girl who was AMAZING. im not going to lie. she was like... good. but so was i. and there was this junior who was jealous hardcore. she started rumors and stuff.... crazy. well, senior girl didnt like me too much. she graduated though. junior girl this year got second chair and i got my first by far. she was complaining and moaning and stuff... yeah. both band directors hate her and told her to quit her complaining, rejoiced when she graduated, and yeah. well, now i have people in my own grade and younger than me (people who have no room to be talking because they really cant play for beans)saying that im terrible. and it hurts. because i know im not terrible. if i was terible, why would i be playing stuff like sonatine by dutilleux when im 15, you know?
and now i got screwed over again because no one likes me. oh well. high school drama sucks. thats why i like orchestra more.

Well, I kinda had that problem last year with my fellow clarinetist. But now I absolutely ADORE her! She's so cool. But yeah. That doesn't happen much in the bands at my school. We disagree with placements once in a while. But don't full blown hate eachother.

We don't really have that problem. Our section is incredibly competitive (we have one of the strongest flute sections in California, and it's a big state with lots of people), but we all respect the fact that everyone is so talented, and rather than choose to cause drama, we try to learn from each other to improve ourselves. It's a damn shame that people have to go causing drama about this sort of thing, as being seated below someone is really just an invitation to learn and grow, and is NOT the worst thing in the world.

Trumpetgirl, yes, you can hear the flutes in a band.. Unless the flutes happen to be horribly outnumbered by louder instruments.

And to respond to the topic, I'm not in a highschool band, but I'm in a highschool orchestra and the amount of jealousy is horrible. I'm first chair because I'm serious about music and I try hard, they have a bad position because they are not serious at all and they never practice. There are also people that claim that I brag a lot, hello? Since when has trying hard been considered bragging? I don't go around saying to everyone 'haha, I'm better than you'. I keep things to myself. Most people my age are so immature.

First of Trumpet girl it might be hard to hear the flutes A. because you are seated behind them and their sound is going straight and away from you making it really difficulte to hear them espesially if you are really focusing in on the music in front of you verses the whole band B. if your band has problem with balance (mine does but we are working hard on that aspect) you might not hear them verses yourself (trumpets) or any other section or last C. i am not saying this is true but you might not know what the flute sounds like because it is a different instrument and it might be blending in with a nother instrument that sounds the same
in conclusion yes you can hear the flutes trumpetgirl

i had a small promblem with drama i made our top band in our school i was the only seventh grader with five other eight graders and one of my friends was very unhappy with me, to say the least, that i made it and she did not every other seventh grader was happy for me and even the eighth graders that did not make it she did not try out for that band as an eighth grader this year (i am a little glad because i got first chair and i did not want her to get even madder at me (she would have been a great player though)) i don't know why she was mad i would have looked at it this way :know i have a whole year to get really good with out her knowing how i sound and i can go and beat her next year but what ever it really does not matter to me

There's no drama in district honor bands. REally amazing...considering that every single person is talented musicians. In my school..ahh..oh boy

<Added>

NOT too much drama in my school though, only sometimes. I used to get A LOT of stares. And 'HEY you're *my name*!!!. YEA, i'm nice to everyone so that's why they respect me^_^ Really talented musicians in my school are nice to everyone...
OH! and do i HATE competitions. I mean i'll play my stuff..but ppl who brag. grrr..and competitions just make some ppl jealous and mad. *sigh* Let's just get along.:D...

That is kind of ironic Schoolgirl.

The only major drama I had of that sort came from an honor band situation. It was nothing to draw the directors attention. Long story short, when I was a sophomore in high school I literally ripped up the competition in my district. It surprised me. I thought I was going to go to high school and loose, so I practiced like crazy. I beat 2nd chair by over 30 points. Was I proud? Heck no I was TERRIFIED!!!

The girls who ended up sitting in the row behind me were really petty about it. I had no idea who they were because they were from another school. They would do stuff like kick my chair while I was playing a solo or while the band director was working with other sections. I just smiled and went on my way, but after 2 days of someone constantly kicking your chair...yeah I was ready to choke them.

The girls in my high school and I actually got along very well. It was amazing considering how jealous and petty most flute players get towards each other. I sat 5th chair in my wind ensamble in college, and I can admit every girl above me had a right to be there. Our entire flute section in college was basically hand picked from across this state. I was honored to be 5th in that band!

Don't let people make you feel bad about how hard you have worked or your abilities. If you go in,play your best, and win, that is fabulous. If you go in play your best, and someone beats you then they deserved it more. Learning from the other players around you is what will eventually make you a stronger player than you can imagine.

yep, that's a big deal.
jealousy among people, it's human nature.
it's really hard to avoid these things because no matter how you try and sink yourself among the rest, jelous people won't stop bugging you.
the nature of a person has lots of insecurities.
and i hate it when it happens...i feel uh...kindda weird about it.

YUp...i agree. OH, and ppl kicking your chair? WOW..that's mean. It's so weird b/c in my school..all the ppl in band look up to the top musicians. Well, the ppl who are mean to you and don't like you..is becasue they're probably JEALOUS. YUP, most likely to be jealous.
I haven't seen serious fighting and all that. BUT in competitions and auditions,.. there is a lot of evil STARES!! (scary) ^_^ ...my teacher told me to stay FAR away from them! and i do:D..

Yes, I can completely empathise with you. Heck, I've lived through it...one girl started spreading rumors about me and how I sucked up to the band teacher to get first chair and that I didn't deserve it. Not cool.

My best advice would probably be to just kill them with kindness. They won't know how to respond.

OH, and a smile can bring happiness to anyone even the person that hates you. Heard that from somewhere..and i believe it.

There was this one time when one of my friends went through a phase and was acting snotty to me. But thats about it.

I hate to say it, but i've been jealous of other people too. Accually, im not sure if it was As much jealousy as it was anger at myself. The ones that were ahead of me didn't seem to practice alot because their flutes constantly stayed at the school. And they were in so many clubs, im not sure they had time to practice even if they wanted to. I was alittle upset about getting 4th chair, but i didn't kick anyone or stare at them wierdly.
