I just watched the news and saw a huge snowstorm in New Zealand! This always blows me away how I'm sitting in 113 degrees (F) heat, and there is beautiful snow and cold weather somewhere else.

[That's 113 degrees and only 3% humidity. You know how some people say that it's so cold that if you spit (or pee) it will freeze before it hits the ground?.........well here it would evaporate before it hits the ground!]

Anyway, it was a great reminder for me to think outside of the small box that I call my life, and remember to see the rest of the world.

Absolutely...

(Can we get much further off-topic? And does it matter?)

Or alternatively; thinking about all the things I got stressed about last week, last year, or before, very few of them still matter in the slightest, and those only the big issues; life, death, love...

Which reminds me, how is your husband's jaw doing? Any good news yet?

Yes, it is interesting (and important!)to think about the diversity of our societies and how far or close (relatively) is everything and everybody.

I have the strange impression that posting here everybody is so close. Sometimes I could not be more wrong!.

In Madrid we can expect some 110+ (43º Celsius) or more by middle August. But it is normally dry weather (less than 40%) and that helps to support it.

Well, it is a way of saying, Madrid in August is really unbearable. Everybody leaves for the sea, mountain or anywhere. Only some tourists dare walking on the streets.

Hard job, being a tourist. But I love it. We are already planning our holidays, probably the Atlantic sea front in France.

Loperello - Thanks for asking. His wound is healing superbly so far. The Maxillo Facial Surgeon is amazed given the extent of the damage. He is giving him the go ahead for resumption of all activities by around September 1 (including playing the trumpet!)

He really misses the trumpet, but he CAN'T WAIT to BLOW HIS NOSE again!!!
It's the little things in life isn't it!
Thanks again!

same here jose luis!

the heat here is really unbearable.
even us(filipinos) who are born in this type of temperature are hiding from the sun specially from 11am-3pm.
i came from school a while ago and i almost collapsed because of th heat..good thing my brother was with me.

we are all waiting for the months: september, oct, nov and december because that's when temperature starts to cool down. during the end of the year we experience misty, cold and windy days but we don't experience snowdays.

kishi,

The risk of collapsing (and even dying) because of heat is very real and extremely dangerous.

Perhaps less for young healthy people, but anyway be very careful and drink lots of water, all the time. Avoid sugar based drinks as Coca Cola or any other similardrinks. Water is the best choice.

Contrary to general belief, one must cover the body (and of course the head) when under the sun to avoid overheating of the body.

The overheating can run wild (a kind of run out effect), the body loses its capability to regulate the temperature and irreversible damage can occur.

A few years ago, a extreme heat wave killed over 15,000 people, just in France.

We are not in summer yet and the temp here is still agreeable (about 83ºF). The worst is from July 15 to August 15. Then we can have over 111ºF.

Europe is a very interesting place to visit and I am happy that young people like scoolgirl and other loof forward to coming here.

When you do (sure you will), you may feel that everything is so old and small, compared to America.

OOPS!
loof forward = look forward

Water is the key. I live in the desert, so we will have daily temperatures over 100 from May through October. Many of those days will be 110+, the highest I've been through is 123 degrees (but truthfully, after 110 it all feels the same).

My son works outside. He uses a Camelback (a backpack that has a gallon of water and a tube to drink from) and intersperses that with bottles of Gatorade (you must use water with Gatorade). A hat is very important. Skin cancer is rampant and deadly here, so he slathers on the sunscreen lotion.

Jose Luis, when you talk about "holidays", how much time does the average person get to take off of work to go on holiday?

I have my own business now so I take a period as long as I can afford (and keep customers waiting). My wife is therapist and she must make her holidays coincident with her patients, that is to say, full August in most cases.

But people working for companies here, normally have 30 calendar days.

Most compamies literally close during August. Some companies that are not directly in the industrial area, spread the holiday season from July to September, so that they always keep a reduced working force and do not have to close completely.

But I can't wait until mine begins!

We complain of hot weather here, but compared to what you describe, Kippsix, this is paradise!

I am curious about why do you suggest to drink water with Gatorade?

OH! and actually i'm not rooting for usa. I'm rooting for my country korea. Yea..i should be rooting for usa. but the men's soccer team isn't that great, and i have to stay true to my country..yup!! i'm so excited for the world cup. I need to buy a t-shirt.:D.. No one really watches the world cup here in usa.. it's probably because of the men's soccer team..heehee.
