I plan to buy an electronic tuner. I am confused about prices vrs performance.

What models/brands are good for an advanced beginner (4th year) flute student?

Should I go for a cheap model (about 20 $) or gettting a higher price model (around 60$) would have important advantages?
Thanks!

The cheaper tuners do a decent enough job for most purposes. A cheap one can be sensitive enough to be quite useful, and can "hear" the full range of a flute (I've gotten mine to respond to E4, and higher using a piccolo). Of course, the display type you prefer (some have lights, some needles, some are digital, some not) will differ, so choose one you are comfortable reading, and as the price goes up, they become slightly more sensitive have built in accessories (like a metronome) or gain a greater range. This may or may not be important to you. I use one of the cheap Korgs myself (got it for $17), and am perfectly happy with it.

Thanks!. A built in metronome would be fine as I have an old wind-up and cannot make subdivisions and fancy rhythms as the electrons do. Do you know what models (low end) with metronome would be fine?

For what it's worth, I have a Korg CA-30 Tuner that I purchased based upon the recommendation of the sales clerk at the music store. It works great and I'm very happy with it. I also bought the companion Korg MA-30 metronome, and it works equally well. Both are small and compact and have very good displays.

I have 50 or so Korg CA30s at school for my students. They are great little tuners for very little money (less than $20) and have held up to daily abuse by middle schoolers. I highly recommend them!

Thank you for your information.

I have been checking about Korg models and for the moment I am more interested in the TM-40, as it integrates a metronome in the same instrument. The price is around 39 US$, so it is still affordable.

Has anybody experience with this model?

I've used it before. A fellow clarinetist (I play clarinet too) in one of the ensembles I played in this past year introduced me to it. It seemed to do a fine job, and I would suggest it to anyone. It's a good deal for both a metronome and a tuner in one convenient package. I'm rather partial to the volume control too...It lets you use the metronome without it pounding through your skull (I developed a bit of an aversion to the sound of a metronome through marching band, so it always bothers me more than most people). It's also rather convenient to be able to use the met and the tuner at once and only have to read one display.

I don't know that specific model, but I have always been happy with the various Korg products I have had. I'm sure the TM-40 will serve you well!

The "Boss" brand seems to be good as well.
