I did not record myself but I have been studying duets for a year (Stamitz and recently Haendel Sonatas) with recordings of my teacher playing the second voice.
I highly recommend this way of practising. It has many advantages (and a few dis):
- Your teacher does not make errors... and it sounds beautiful
- She/she is always in tune so your are forced to follow (unless you are somewhat tone deaf)
- You can practice a part thousand times without bothering others (except family and neighbors).
- The recording does not "wait" of follows you. If you stumble, you must learn to recover in some way. A great practise for real duets!
- I enjoyed the harmonies (and lack of) of the two flutes playing that it was a great incentive to study hours and improve.
Problems:
The speed is fixed, no way to play slower ..or faster
It is not easy, particularly to begin - It helps to count one, two, three (at the right speed) on the recording before the first note.
Your teacher should play with a metronome, (better if wearing headphones) otherwise its hard as hell to follow the minor changes in speed.
