I was just thinking about the different "moods" of music. Just thought I'd get some peoples opinions on which moods certain instruments tend to favor.

Slow and/or richer sounding songs tend to favor the string section, while powerful and strong music favors the brass.
The flutes and piccolos tend to play mystical, poetic, and giddy-like music. And harmonic or "soulful" type music tends to favor reed intruments.

I know that it's not always this way. Thats just how I see it.
The only main exeption I can think of right now is the French Horn, which has the ability to blend in with any section somehow. I couldn't think of percusion(sp?) because they play with everything. Although Chimes and symbols seem to go along with the flutes.

So what are your opinions on this?

I'm not saying that those are the only music those intruments play I'm just saying they seem to favor those types.

Oboe: When the work opens with an oboe solo, someone's going to die tragically. Otherwise pops in for moments of longing, sad memories, or hints at the forthcoming tragedy. When played up beat and joyously it's usually in the role of Swans or other water foul.

Seriously it's role can be quite similar to the flute, but it adds a degree of regality and tension. The expression capability of the oboe allows it to get away with passages that would be musically dull on other instruments.
