Maybe I'm being a bit dense, but how do you play low C if you extend the tube?

You don't. The low C fingering sounds a B, so you can play low C#, and low B, but not low C. It's a compromise, but if you really only need that B once or twice, the plastic tube or silver extension could do it for you.

Call me vain, but I would rather pay the $75 to get the extension and not have a plastic tube at the end of my flute.

Personally, Kara, I feel the same way. I'd have to try to get one out of gold for cosmetic reasons, though. An interesting note...The extensions (and likely the plastic tube as well, though I can't vouch for that) can also be put on a B foot to allow a low A should you be playing a transcription or something that isn't fully within the flute's range. It will elminate your ability to play a low B, just as on a C foot, it keeps you from playing a low C in favor of the B.

Not vain at all.

I would go one step further and say the extension is more of use to those with B foot joints that want to get out a low A. :-p

Foot joint use aside if you have any desire to resell your flute in the US your better off with a B foot.
