ok so i have been playing flute since 5th grade and i am now a freshman in highschool. i know that i want to keep playing throughout highschool, throughout college, and possibly after. i have a "Bundy II" from the Selmer Company... it isn't a very good flute (if it's in tune on the bottom notes the top notes are out of tune and vice versa.. also the pads are close to ruined and is missing corks everywhere).. my mom bought it at BJ's so that pretty much says it all. now we are looking to get a new flute for me and i was wondering if i should upgrade from a student to an intermmediate flute? any advice would be appreciated!!!

If you have the $$ to spend on an intermediate flute then go for it. I started on a used bundy 2 but switched to a student yamaha within a year so I understand what its like to play on a clunker. How did I know when to upgrade from the yahama? When I no longer heard any benefit from my tone exercises

If you feel like you've gotten the most you can from the flute, then it's time to upgrade. Most student instruments are at about the same level (some a little better or a little worse, but they can all only do so much), so it doesn't make too much sense to buy a new student model. There are some really nice intermediate flutes available that can be had for relatively little expense (check out the flutes at fluteworld.com), and depending on how seriously you'll be involved in music through college and beyond, some of them could potentially last you for years.

You should upgrade. Try an armstrong flute they a good.
