Im coming up to my last yr of school and i still am not 100% sure wat to do with my life. My most recent idea is to become a primary school teacher and to also incorporate music into my 'degree'...

It means ive combined 2 of the things im good at. Does that seem like a good idea? just wondering

I would always advise people to study what they are interested in. Don't pick something you dislike because you think you will make a lot of money.

If you want to study music, then study music. I don't know where you are from, but in Britain you can do any degree then convert to Education with a one-year Postgraduate diploma. That might be a good idea for you. My one word of warning though: I did music for one year at uni, in combination with other subjects. I HATED it because the people who wanted to be performers looked down their noses at people like me. Music courses are competitive, not only to get in, but once you are in there. If you don't ultimately want to be a performer (or, like me, knew you weren't capable of it) I would advise you to think carefully about whether you will enjoy such a competitive atmosphere.

Everyone's different and perhaps you are OK with that, and perhaps you would be in a class of lovely, lovely people but it is worth thinking about; although I am definately not trying to scare you off!

an education degree in music is probably the most useful. My performance degree was training, pure and simple. College was good place to make connections and learn history, theory, etc and my degree has helped me get jobs teaching privately in music schools, but, if I could go back in time I would get an education degree.

And, look around at programs. The Music Education program at UConn is 5 years, if I'm remembering correctly--you do a lot of the things a performance major would do AND you take the music education classes (including the classes where you learn to play all of the basic band instruments--now THAT I would like ).

There are also programs in music business around that combine performance with business classes and classes from other depts--maybe Dennis can talk about that if he's not too buried in rehearsals and his new flute.

Here's a website with a bunch of career listings that deal with music.

I have a chart that lists the salary and education needed but I can't find it on my computer.
