I rode for ten years (from the time I was 4 through freshman year of high school), but had to give it up because I had commitments to the marching band, and couldn't do both. I've been on a horse occasionally since then, but not nearly as much as I used to.

At the same time? Doesn't that mess with your tone and fingering?

It depends on which gait you're using.

I rode and jumped fences for several years when I was younger. It is one of my old hobbies that I miss. They're amazing animals, and you are very lucky to do both!

I have always had horses. In fact, I geve up playing flute in favor of riding in college. I was better with horses, and didn't get a really thorough music education, so I was completely unprepared for the level of flute playing required at the University level. I did get on the riding team right away.

While I rode and played, (not at the same time...the piccolo would have got me bucked off for sure!!) I had problems with my left shoulder coming forward and twisting my body while riding. No sports injuties, but it was really hard to get my body straight and even.

I started playing flute again in my early 30's when I developed health problems that limited my riding.

Last year, I was hospitalized and had a really nasty abdominal surgery which left me unable to play the flute for months. I haven't been able to ride since then, unless the horse just walks verrryyy ssslllooooowwwlllyy. I hope to be back on horseback in another year or two.

I do! Well, I don't ride, but I train/show miniature horses. They are my life! Even come before my flute. I rode English for two years until I got into minis, so I do have some riding expirience under my belt. Do you have a horse? I have a 7 year old black bay miniature gelding.
