Most professionals and advancing students play open hole flute. The sound projects and is much more resonant than a closed hole flute.

LOL you use "band director" like it is a bad word. Actually I am a MS Band Director that was an oboe major. I took up the flute in college and really love it. I play it much more than the oboe. Guess we all pass on what we were taught, even if it is incorrect. I prefer open hole over closed hole and would still recommend that a more advanced student buy an open hole model. Closed hole step-up flutes are harder to find anyway. BTW has anyone played the Boston Legacy flute? I have played their piccolos and really liked them. I was wondering what the flutes were like....
