Has anyone tried the Emerson Ultimo Piccolo? As far as specifications go, it is identical to the Emerson Boston Legacy except that it has solid silver keys. I've heard great things about the Boston Legacy.

Any suggestions for a grenadilla piccolo? I've played Yamaha (YPC-62) before, but that's about as far as my experience goes with grenadilla piccolos.

I have. They are wonderful and I highly recommend them. IMHO, the scale much better on it then on the Yamaha.

In the realm of wooden piccs, I strongly suggest used instruments. Not only can you get more for your money, but they are already matured. Wooden instruments go through a period of change as they age during which they normal get darker sounding (which is generally the goal with a wood picc), and the pitch tendencies can change slightly. After they have matured they are also far less likely to crack. By buying used, you get a more stable instrument. I would recommend looking for Zentner, old Roy Seaman (not the ones currently being produced by Gemeinhardt), Haynes, Powell, Burkart, etc.

Zentner, that's the name of my reference!
The piccolist who frequently plays with me at the orchestra own one. She and this instrument are a perfect match to me and my Sankyo. First because of the color (it's really not a brand new piccolo, as Flutist06 said, it's matured), and secondly because she already has a domain over the instrument.

I tried a used Zenter and it was just okay for me. Maybe it needed some tweaking. I prefer to buy new myself because you never know what kind of problems it may have had before that may come back again.

I do beleive the original poster wanted reviews on the Ultimo piccolo anyway.

Oh never mind. Sorry about that, I just re read his post. For some reason Ultimo just stuck out at me.

I think that the Burkart Phelan piccs are great also.

Well the Ultimo is a solid picc. It's not my cup of tea, but it may well be yours. Whatever you go after, be sure to playtest a potential purchase before any money changes hands, as there's no way to tell whether you'll like a piccolo otherwise.
