Playing style: I play in a wind band of 100 members, thus i need the volume to be there.

Tone desired: Dark,Mellow,Deep,Penetrating,Full,Fat.

Embouchure: Wide aperture,fast airspeed.

Current Flute: Yamaha 381...feels like im restricted by the headjoint...i just cant achieve the tone and volume desired at times...just not comfy anymore...

Prices of headjoints in Singapore Dollars : 750 for the Miya and 980 for the Sankyo.

Ive yet to try them yet, but basically i want YOUR comments on which to purchase based on which would fit me best,quality of the headjoint and etc. ( yes yes i will try to get my hands on them to try them out dont worry ... and yes im on a student budget people...)

I have owned both and would say that the Miyazawa might be more on the lines of what you are looking for, but everyone is different.

Sorry, I should say that I own the Miyazawa 6, but have tried the others also I get a lot fuller sound out of the Miyazawas. I would describe the Sankyo as more sweet and Lyrical and the Miyazawas more bold. For me, the Miyas are darker then the Sankyo. Hope that helps. :)

btw, is the MZ7 more appropriate for my style?if only there was MZ 7andahalf..haha...i kinda need the rectangular-ness due to my wide aperture...i naturally sound airy on my current stock heajoint ( the tone hole is noticeably smaller then handmade 1s )

I never had a Myia, but I own and play a NRS-1 in my Sankyo 14K.
What I can say agrees with Kara's comment, it's very sweet and rich in colors, and I can go from pp to FF so easily. It takes though sometime to get accostumed to it, since my previous flute was a Muramatsu from 1976.
Anyway, regardless of what have been my experience, I believe if you can try playing both, it will be better to make a decision.

Your welcome Frummer. I have an MZ-6 head on one of my flutes which is a also a Miyazawa and it does play nicely. I think that higher numbers that you get up into with the Miya heads the bigger sound that you get. The MZ-7 was super big, but a little to gruff for my liking. If you want a really full BIG sound, then that one is the one that I would say would work. If you have a chance to try them all out though, then you can make your own interpretation on them. I tried one with a platinum riser and it really darkened up the sound. Have you considered any other heads?

If you are in the US, you may was to give Liz a call at JL Smith. Just tell her what you are looking for and she is great at helping with selections. They do also carry used headjoints there and the Loptin I tried might be up your alley also.

The only way to tell if a headjoint is to your liking is to try them. What other people's perceptions are of them means nothing.

Listening to other people playing on them means nothing.

Get a friend or friends with ears you respect <G> and try the headjoints is a few different situations room, hall, etc and see if YOU like them..

Both are good headjoints and this is ALL about personal taste.
One sales rep will tell you they like this sound better...the next will tell you the other one...

Just get what you like and is pleasing and comfortable to you. You always play better on an instrument that you ENJOY.

It is interesting to have the possibility to make a (good quality) record of oneself playing. It is a little bit like earing a record of one's own voice. It does not sound exactly the same if you see what I mean.

I would have wanted the platinum miya headjoint...but when i enquired about the price, the saleswoman mentioned 13k...thats a longshot from my student budget..haha
