i've been auditioning for county, districts, and states since 7th grade.
just know your scales and do as best as you can on the prepared selections. also have (ask politely) your band director look up an old warm up book for some sight readings to practice a little before too.
i'm actually waiting to hear if i've made states (wyoming). other than practicing for almost two hours everyday for a month straight, it was also a confidence thing. have a friend there telling you that you'll do wonderful even with the butterflies... it helps.

It depends on the format of your audition. Some honor groups have their own format for scales that it's frowned upon to change (adding extra octaves, different rhythyms and the like), but other award additional points for extra octaves. Eb is going to be one of the harder ones to learn 3 octaves, simply because Eb4 is such a picky note on most flutes. Check out the requirements, and see if it's worthwhile, or if that energy is best spent on the piece.

assuming that you're in 9th grade, trying for state, isnt the upper division grades 9-12? If so, it really makes the competition harder for a 9th grader.

I have not auditioned for state, although i may this year as a freshman

What experiences are you wanting to know about Kevin?

I would say this about the 3 octave thing on scales. Some judges will think you are trying to show off, others will be impressed. Our scoring system for scales was based 1-10. I think we had 5 judges that year, highest and lowest scores were dropped. I lpayed Db major 3 octaves. One judge gave me a 5/10 essentially giving me an "F", and another judge gave me a 10/10 basically saying it was perfect. The other judges gave me 8-9/10. You never know what is judge is going to say about your audition.

Just practice consistently and work hard. It sounds like you have placed well in the past and if you continue to work hard I am sure you will. Don't go in to the audition with the mind set that you have to be the best. Go in with the midset that you are prepared for your audition and you are going to play to the best of your ability. If you play your best, and you aren't first chair, then at least you know the person sitting above you deserves to be there.

be wary of what band directors tell you, some of them will fill your head with garbage. I was told as a beginner that I would not be a good player because I was unable to whistle. It is nice to get a good chair, but later in life no one will ask about it.

Getting a good chair, or making All-State (regionals, Honor Bands, etc.) are excellent experiences and make for great memories.

But, more importantly, the process (pratice, settings goals, committment, perseverence etc.) builds a foundation for life skills that WILL matter later in life.

Remember, the perspective of what is important changes as you age and gain experience.

take a break. i usually need one about once every 3-4 weeks... thats why most jobs give weekends, or you get so flustered and stressed you can't do your best & improve.
