I was first chair in HS and played on a kazoo.

Kara, a Kazoo? LOL! That must've been awesome ;D

I was just saying that cuz my band director (from concert band) hated me so much (I think) last year, so that's why I'm surprised he didn't say anything...

I was just joking. I have somewhat of a wicked sence of humor at times. Seriously though, I was never first chair in HS and I was home taught the last three years of it, so never had the chance. I really didn't like band much. I was stuck on piccolo because I was the only one that could play it.

My band director said that a open hole flute is the best. That is what kind he has

Please have a look through the forum and you will read that open hole flutes are not the best.

I wouldn't put too much stock into what band directors say. Thank God my neice who plays flute has me to guide her and tells me what the BD says to do before she does it! Her flute would be a mess if she listened to him.

I did play on an open hole flute, and have recently bought a closed hole flute that is worth at lease 3000 us dollars more than the open hole, is your band director telling me that i have just spent the extra money down grading ??!!

There are so many professional players out there that prefer closed hole flutes to open and that's really all it boils down to, personal preference :-)

the first band director I encountered way back in 5th grade told me I could never play flute because I could not whistle and because I had crooked teeth...

How utterly ridiculous! I have some extremely unusual teeth (mostly because the dental work (including surgery) they wanted to do might have prevented me playing afterwards), and it's never stopped me playing!

Case in point, be very weary about advice given from a band director. Not all, are bad, but most that I have come in contact with give out horrilbe advice. Thanks God my neice tells me everything her BD tell her to do on the flute first. She is in her first year of flute and has already had to correct the BD on things about the flute from what I have told her. She is a fast learner.
