Hello! I am currently a junior in high school and am beginning to look into college/university music programs. For most programs you must audition for placement and/or scholarships. Are there any specific pieces suitable for these auditions? What are your recommendations. What exactly do they look for when you choose a piece and play? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

always do pieces that demonstrate different styles of playing. For example, one student of mine just did music school auditions and prepared a handel sonata, mozart concerto and faure fanatasie, these are all safe bets, you may want to include a 20th century sonata such as poulenc or piston, etc.

Choose pieces you are comfortable with, and play each piece with a different style and vibrato, etc.

Also be sure to check the requirements of everywhere you'll be auditioning. Most have some pieces that are required, and often you can find ways to overlap the requirements so that you do not have to learn an entirely new program for each audition.
