To Flutesrthebest, band directors often give out incomplete, or just plain incorrect information, and I fear that in this circumstance you were mislead. How hard you blow is not how you determine what octave you're playing in. That will create some big tone and and pitch problems, and is not at all good advice. Band directors often mean well, but relatively few actually know enough about instruments other than their primary instrument (and perhaps something they double on) to actually teach you about them. Take everything band directors tell you with a grain of salt.
