i am just not progressing on the flute.
i need harder literature.
if someone could suggest something really challenging...it really doesn't matter if you read this and go pffftt she could never play that. i need something that will get me out of this rut.

thanks.

Any literature can be challenging even if it's not technically difficult, as long as you make the most of it from a musical standpoint. If you're looking for things with lots of ink on the page, most concerti (Mozart, Ibert, Mower, Vivaldi, Chesky) in our repertoire have at least challenging sections. There are also the classic virtuoso pieces with lots of finger wiggling like Carnival of Venice, Carmen Fantasie, and the like. Or sonatas/sonatines/sonatinas like the Prokofieff, Poulenc, Milhaud, Burton, etc. Hope some of that helps.

Not knowing what level you're playing at now makes it hard to gauge what you might consider challenging, so take suggestions with a grain of salt....What's hard for one person isn't necessarily difficult for another.

i found that i had the same problem... although it was slightly caused by my teacher not acknowledging that iwas better than she thought. Try looking through an exam prospectus to find pieces at your level or the level above... it helped me a lot and i definitelt found some interesting things to try out!!!

Chris is correct, it is more impressive when you show what you can do with a simple piece, that said, there are a slew of pieces by Jolivet, Ibert et al that are very difficult, message me if you want to hear about my judging experience in asia recently, many students played difficult pieces well but left me cold..

oh trust me i know that and i will be working on musicality and tone all along. I am a musician too...i know whats bearable versus whats beautiful (which is not to say i am up to the beautiful yet), but i do want to improve technically and the only way to do that is to play technically hard songs. the only reason i dont ask for other types of pieces is because i have them already and i know which ones i want. if i were to do an audition i know where my skill level is and i know what i can play effectively. i just want to become all around better at the flute and this is an aspect i need to work on too.

what I would suggest is difficult pieces from each period:

Baroque: Bach E minor Sonata, B Minor sonata
Classical: Schubert theme and variations on Trockne BLumen
20th century: Jolivet Chant de linos
Ibert Concerto
