hey, i haven't been on for a while. i was wondering, how does color affect the flute? I've heard it's not at all good for it and i was wondering why not.

It's more likely that "color" (red, green, etc.) has been added to really poorly made instruments to help sell them. If you've got a red flute, it's probably not very good quality.

hey thanks guys. i was thinkin bout geting a black flute with gold keys but i heard it's bad for the flute. so thanks guys. i also heard its real bad for the clarinet. when i first joined band, my band director showed me a blue clarinet, and the first thing she said was, "now this is not very good for the clarinet or the flute so i'd recommend getting your instrument in it's natural color. flutes it would be silver, clarinets, it would be black." i was thinkin bout those colors cause i'm goin to high school in 3 months from now as a freshman, and the school colors are black and gold. so i wanted to show my school spirit for next year so i wouldn't be considered as so much of a geek.(play in band, wear glasses, need braces and will get them real soon, and cant get rid of acne lol) i'd say im a nerd.

The colour (UK spelling) is a consequence of a lacquer being applied. Although this is very common with brass instruments until recently no-one did so with flutes.

Personally, I think a coloured saxophone is great for Jazz and some other forms of popular music played by small groups. I've only every come across one person who considered that lacquered brass instruments sounded inferior to unlacquered and unplated ones - and I can't hear any difference.

Some repair shops have no experience with lacquered (ie coloured) flutes and are taken by surprize when heat destroys the lacquer! In general, coloured flutes/piccolos are cheap unbranded instruments with a low resale value. In my experience they play at least as well as branded student instruments and sometimes better.

Just to clarify, the colors are not BAD for the flute....They won't make much of a difference, actually. The flutes that are colored are of such low quality (usually...A Landell titanium flute that's anodized purple is obviously an exception) before the color is even applied that they are junkers whatever the outer layer is. You can't turn a good flute bad by applying colored lacquer to it (as long as you do so in a reasonable manner), but you can't turn a bad flute good by doing that either. The colors often denote flutes you probably don't want to be dealing with, but it's not because of the colors themselves....It's because of the flute that's underneath.
