I know the flute and piccolo has the least range for dynamics than any instrument, but I kinda need help.
-.-' I am a freshman in high school, fixing to become a section leader. But I have always had trouble with dynamics. My senior section leader tells me to put more air through the flute, and I do. But it feels like the instrument is holding back my air, making it less dramatic than what it should be. I have played my friends flute, which was a Yamaha, and the tone and dynamics was really good. So I was wandering if it's me, or my flute. My flute is a open-hole Gemeinhardt.

Flute does not have fewer options than other instruments, it's just harder to get out of the mp-mf range than with things like oboe or horn. It takes time and work to learn the cocntrol necessary to perform a wide range of dynamics without compromising tone or intonation, but you also need a flute that will work with you to produce what you're hearing in your head. Gemeinhardts tend to be somewhat difficult to play largely differing dynamics on. That's not to say that it's impossible, but it can be more difficult than if you were playing another flute. What kinds of exercises have you done to focus on dynamics? If you work with your teacher on dynamics and notice no progress, then the flute might be to blame, but if you haven't done anything specifically oriented to dynamics, then the problem could just as easily be you (or at least partially you).

Thank you so much for the reply. ^^ I have done exercises where I go from each note, starting on I think B4 and I hold it out. And as I do, I crescendo, and decrescendo. But when I play for my instructor for a solo, he keeps saying that I need to put more dynamics in it. But it's to the point that to get the dynamics needed, I'm running out of air faster than normal. Is there any good exercises that may improve this before I become a section leader this upcoming school year?

I never understand why some teachers "OK" flutes on which it is difficult to play dynamics. 30+ years ago a dynamic range was difficult on most student flutes but not today. In addition, young students who find a flute easier to play get more enjoyment out of it. In the UK, the main reasons why Boosey and Hawkes had trouble with their range of flutes was that they were unresponsive, poor tone and as expensive as alternatives. The tone on a student Gemeinhardt flute is nice but without a good dynamic range its not an instrument of choice. You shouldn't expect conductors or examiners or an audience to know/understand the limitations of the choosen instrument.

Incidentally, a competent piccolo player on a modern instrument should have no problem making a lounder sound than a trumpet - except in the lowest octave!

I know what you mean about the fuzzy sound. -.-' But it does have a great lower register, in my opinion. But it's kinda too late to try out new flutes because my mom is already paying alot for this one. But it's way better than my other one. It was a black flute, Hawk, and I know about the rumors about it breaking easily and it not playing very well. But, it did get me into All-District and to 2nd round of All-State. So, I don't know what to do. Thank you for your opinion. ^^

I don't think much of "Gemmies" but I can sound good on one, as could any good player, just that one sounds better on a better horn..logical..

Oh, I didn't know you can adjust the embrochure hole. Hm....cool. But I don't think I can send it all the way up there. Can I get it fixed at a regular music store?

Most stores don't possess the knowledge and experience of Joe B. Some MIGHT be able to perform such an operation, but it's a delicate task (any change to the embouchure hole can have a drastic impact in how the flute plays), and the vast majority of repair folks at local music stores just don't have the ability to alter the embouchure hole and make a good job of it.

It would cost under $10 to have it shipped priority mail if you are in the US. That is worth it in my opinion. I would not fool around by trying to cut costs and send it to a local repair tech.
