Hi there Ray and welcome! I only attend two forums but this one is my favorite. Best of luck with the flute and if you have any questions at all, ask away.

Hey. I'm new to 8notes but an old hand at the flute. I'm quite happy to have you post on the flute forum but I may tell you more than once that the flute is the most expressive instrument and I refuse to believe otherwise. (Really I'm not that opinionated, I just like to say that to stir up controversy amongst my musical friends)

Although I am beginning to be able to express some emotions and certainly to feel deep emotions even through my humble own flute playing, I consider that the Oboe is, by far, the most expressive of all winds. But of course this is a personal opinion and everybody will try to transmit all the best they can through their preferred instrument.

I would say that the human voice is the most expressive of all, if you allow me to consider it a "wind instrument"

It is probably not the best idea to teacher yourself. I did that and it really messed me up. I contacted http://www.musikalessons.com and they got me all straightened out. Good luck!

I'm a flute player...no kind of xxx-tist!!!
&
The baritone sax is the most expressive instrument (with the piano as a close second and clarinet as third) for me...bari certainly has the widest range of emotion

It is the PLAYER behind the instrument that makes it expressive. Pardon me for saying this, but this whole debate about what is the most expressive instrument is childish and downright stupid.

No instrument is expressive if the player cannot or simply does not play it "expressively"

This said, I believe that not all winds (and in extension not all strings, keyboards, etc.) are equal; some have more capabilities and provide the player with considerably more resources to make her/his art reach the listener.

I do not see how we could compare a Tuba with a Flute, just to name two extremes, (not only in the range limits).

I also think a debate like this lets people express their perceptions (and experiences) on different instruments and in this sense I find it interesting and enlightening.
