Hi, I am going to be auditioning for my university band in the fall and I was thinking about playing Flight of the Bumblebee. I was wondering if that is a good choice for an audition or if I should be playing something else. Thanks.

I think you should play something that is specifically written for flute. If you are looking for a flute solo piece I would suggest you take a look at CPE Bach's Sonate in A minor. Or if you have to play with a piano you can choose one of JS Bach's pieces for flute.

play something with contrasting mvts, you need to show contrast and control...

I agree with Partick. How about something like the Poulenc Sonate? The second movement is very expressive and really changes the mood from the first. I wouldn't go with the fligh of the bumblebee personally.

Thanks. I won't play Flight of the Bumblebee. I don't really have time to learn a new song so I think I will play a Sonatina or Sicilienne by Faure.

kara is correct, Poulenc is a good choice, basically and Handel or Bach sonata with contrasting movements are good, they may also want to hear music from different time periods, the Faure Fantaisie is also very nice as it is not too long...

Hi!! I don't play flute (unfortunatly), but I suggest Five Short Pieces for Flute and Piano by Bernhard Heiden. I'm playing some of his pieces from Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano and it's really fun and challanging. Anyway, it's your choice.

I considered doing Bumblebee, too, since I did it and got a perfect score for a few contests and competitions just a month or two ago. But, I went against it because there are so many wonderful songs out there you can use to show off technical ability that doesn't sound so rushed. I'm personally going with something from Bach's Suite in B minor.

There's a really nice peice by Jules Mouquet "Cinq peices breves 1"... Its really good for showing off tone & articulation, phrases & all that crap... Wel, anyway, good luck with your audition.
