Visit www.fluteworld.com and look at the list of flute they sell. If you are browsing ebay and don't see the flute on that list then it most likely is not good. There are some brands missing that FW does not sell such as Miyazawa and Armstrong. They carry all the popular brands except for those. The rest of the brands if they are not on the list are usually handmade flutes by private makers.

I play an antique Gemeinhardt flute, aside from its age, I find it to be a very nice flute to play. They're kinda pricy though, from looking at www.fluteworld.com, the lowest priced one is $350.00.
Id also suggest www.musiciansfriend.com, there is a wide range of different instruments there, some really nice ones going cheap.
Just try different flutes until you find one that fits you, name brands dont really matter as long as it 'feels good' and plays well. So rent a few out from your local music store to try.

Actually Gemeinhardt it one of the lowest priced well known name brand flutes on the market. $350 is a very good price after you start looking around at others.
