I actually own 4....One for marching (an old Armstrong), one in the key of Db, and two concert piccs (a Zentner and a Powell).

I own two: Pearl Grenaditte Piccolo for my outdoor performances and a Burkart Wood Piccolo for my indoor performances

I actually only own ten of them. I think I will try and get every brand! lol!

I only have one Wood...I just don't play outside!

Oh, don't feel bad, I was just kidding about owning 10. I only own one myself because that is all I need. I compromised and bought a grenadite piccolo so that I can play indoors and outdoors without the worry or the hassle of wood. I used to own a wood Burkart, but no one can tell the difference, if anything the Grenadite pearl sound better.

Just wanted to add, that I use it for marching. I also used it a little for concert band (I got it last January, so only half the year. I also was 3rd chair so the first chair played piccolo more than I got to last year)

This year I probably won't get to after marching band since I'll be the youngest in the Wind Symphony (the top band at our school for grades 10-12. Im pretty sure I made it into it, but won't know for sure for at least a week!) If not, I'll be very high in the Symphonic band, so I might get to use it then.

I recently got a Pearl Grenaditte and am loving it! I use it for indoor concerts/pit orchestra, and also for outdoor summer concerts. Just a side note, but Bach/Telemann sound wonderful on it--so close to a baroque flute

I also own a very old Yammy 32, although revised and in good condition.
Actually I don't play the piccolo very often. That's why I keep only this one.

Can we assume then that most flautists own a piccolo? Or did I phrase this such that those that do not thought they were not to reply (which was not my intention)?

If the population sample of flutists includes all flutists, from beginner to professional, I'd assume most do not own a piccolo. However, I then wonder if most professional flutists own a piccolo?

i don't own one but are they similar to flutes playing wise? because they sound cool and once i get to a good grade on flute(because i have now got a teacher) i hope to get one

If we're asking only intermediate players and above (you will VERY rarely find a beginner playing picc), even if they don't own one, they probably have access to one. Most schools have one or more piccs that their students can use, and they're easy to rent from a music store. Any serious flutist should be able to play piccolo to some decent level, even if they don't plan on studying it as thoroughly as they would flute.

And to Leigh, the piccolo is similar in that it uses mostly the same fingerings and the technique is very similar, but it's a completely different beast from the flute, and playing it well will take some serious study and hard work. Intonation in particular is a bigger issue on piccolo than flute, and producing a tone that is both full and well-controlled throughout the range is quite difficult, along with dynamics, and even learning to produce the top of the picc's range. I would encourage you to start learning when your teacher thinks you're ready, but be prepared for a good bit of work to start sounding good on it, and expect it to screw with your flute playing a bit at first....it takes some time to learn to switch back and forth without there being a change in tone or technique.

I wouldn't say most (especially intermediate/highschool) players have their own piccolo. Out of the 30ish flutes at my school, im pretty positive that there are 4 of us that have our own.

I'm thinking of college level (music majors) flute players, the equivalent of college level flute players, and those above that level. (In my mind) I'm excluding high school flute players.
