Top 3 flutists in the world.
Boy, have I ever opened a “can of worms” with this, but:
I read a recent (local) post wherein someone (most likely a male, since “he” only gave initials”) --- positions that: “History will record that the 3 greatest flutists of all time are: William Kincaid, James Galway and Jean-Pierre Rampal.”.
I choose to take issue with this because:
In the first instance, that “list” should have NEVER been narrowed down to “3” flutists. When you’re of the stature of these flutists, there is “no such thing” as “better” or “best”.
In the second instance, the author should have expanded his “list” to the “top TEN” flutists.
I don’t want to be ridiculous here, and suggest that there should be a “top “100” flutists --- there does, after all, have to be a “drawing line” in place, if you will.
NOT in the order of “how good they are” ---- because when you’re in the stature of the following great flutists, there is no such thing as “who is better than whom” ---- but here is MY list of the top TEN flutists in the world:
Doriot Dwyer
James Galway
Paula Robison
Susan Milan
Marina Piccinini
Julius Baker
James Pellerite
William Kincaid
Jean_Pierre Rampal
William Bennett
I realize that I’ve left out the names of other great flutists, such as: Don Peck, Joan Bennett, Maurice Sharpe, Murray Panitz, Emile Opava, etc., etc., but I had to pick the “top ten”.
That was MY call. Your opinions are welcome and invited, as I’d like to hear from you all, on this subject.
Regards, Jim Millen

Aside from Pan and the Pied Piper,
Buffardin (He was probably the one who to premiered THE Bach Sonatas
Quantz (Buffardin's student)Wrote the book On Playing the Flute.
Marcel Moyse (Influenced way too many 20th cent. flutists to be left out of any list.)
Claude-Paul Taffanel (1844-1908) is usually considered the founder of the French Flute School
Charles Nicholson (1795-1837) may have been one of the very first concert flute soloists for a larger audiences and who may have influenced Boehm.
Theobald Boehm (1794-1881) who is the designer of the modern flute as we basically know it.

However, there are a few recording flutists that I don't like and they're permanantly on the "Tim Dislikes" list. |
|
Oh come on now Tim. You say something like that and then don't give a list? Inquiring minds want to know!
I can say that any flutists that uses and excessive amount of vibrato would be on my do not like list. It is distracting to listen to and I highly dislike it.
