Oh, you know kids...if they play on a particular brand then they will say it is the best even if they have no clue. we think we know everything we are young only to find out later when becoming adults that there is SO much that we don't know!
Yes, it is an on going pattern, but it still does get annoying to us people that know it all. lol!!!

Hey, I've just become a member today and your message was the first message l saw (the words 'flute' and 'guy' jumped out at me) lol
Last year l bought a Yamaha Flute and it is the best thing so far!
Got it pretty much first hand for $900 so its reasonably cheap. It tunes very well and the closed hole version works fabulously for every experience level.
I totally recommend it to you!!!

Just in case anyone hasn't noticed, the original poster has already found and bought a flute. You may want to read through the posts first.

I agree that Yamaha flutes are great, but I don't agree that they are fairly cheap at all. New, the bottom line student 221 starts out at $800 in the US.

Fingering for an E sharp:

Look at or think of a piano keyboard. Is there a black key between the E and the F ?(black keys make the flats and the sharps)
http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/music/piano/index.htm
No. The next key up from the E is the F key.
So....that means that the next note up from an E (E#) would be the same fingering as an F!!!

My flute in High school was a Armstrong. They are a little weak on the high end if you ask me. They don't produce that big fat sound. They do sound nice still for a student model. I have an Armstrong M-80 circa 1980.

anywho...yamaha's are good too.My friend has a first act one and it's actually good.I use it to noodle around.

I haven't had that problem with the top of the Armstrong range. Albeit my Armstrong is a picc rather than a flute, but I can get top C's out of it with no real difficulty.

I used to own an Armstrong piccolo and loved it. Their piccolo's s are much better than their flutes.

Ha, back on the subject of "guys playing flute..."

I learned (self-taught) in high school, but didn't get any flak from anyone. I was already an all-state euphonium player, played trombone in the jazz band, and the year before, my director handed me an english horn and asked "can you learn this by the time we go to contest?" So I had a reputation for being "the guy who can pick up any instrument and play it." If you have some confidence, and do things well, you usually don't catch hell for it.

Also, when I was teaching music, one of my beginning flute students was a guy, and I heard one of the other students giving him a hard time, saying "flute is a girl instrument." I responded by saying, "Really? How do you know it's a girl instrument? I can tell a boy puppy fom a girl puppy, but I don't know how to tell a boy instrument from a girl instrument. Help me out here."

I never had a problem with that issue again.
