I want to start playing the flute and i have tried one out and i love it! Someone i know is selling an Earlaham (I think thats spelt right) and a school music teacher spoke to a man who said it would be ok as a starter flute but not to pay more than £70 for it.
However... do i go for this option... orrr.... pay more for a better make as the man said this one would not last too long?!!

Please help.
Thanks
xxxx

Haven't heard of an Earlaham, but I'm in the USA.

Might be better to go with a better flute. The better the flute, the easier it will be for you to learn and stick with it.

Good Luck,
Bill

I would avoid the "Earlaham" flute and get a model from a reputable maker such as Yamaha, Emerson, Jupiter, Pearl, etc. Also plan to get yourself a good teacher. Aside from helping you improve your playing, they can spot and correct bad habits that can lead to serious problems such as carpal tunnel, TMJ, or RSI's.

Do you mean it's made in the USA or made for the USA market?

I found an Earlham flute.

My advice still holds.

Good luck.

Dio, at the beginner level there's no way for a soon-to-be flutist to know how well a given instrument might play. It is indeed important that you try different flutes once you're able, but in this case, it won't mean much. Far more important is that you find a flute from a reputable maker that's in good condition. To the OP, a flute can have just about anything engraved on it, and those engravings don't often mean much. You could name a brand of flute the "USA America" line and still have them made in Pakistan. In any case, an "Earlham" (or "Earlaham") flute is most likely not of good quality, and you'd be better off going with a Pearl, Yamaha, Trevor James, Jupiter, etc.

Spanna commented that he/she tried the Earlham and loved it. Seemed like Spanna was basing a decision to purchase on one flute. So, I asked Spanna if he/she had tried others.

Whether a beginner or not, it can only help to try different flutes, etc.

Spanna: Sorry about the he/she.

How do you like the Yamaha compared to the Earlaham?

Yamaha makes good flutes.

I think that the Earlham is a brand that is primarily sold in the UK.

http://www.free-scores.com/boutique/buy_Earlham_120_646.htm

536 Euros. or about $574.90 .
If they are advertising it as USa made with a british soundung name, then I'd be suspect of the quality. The above compaly only sells them to US adresses. I have not ever seen one here in the US so far. So why would they make them here and not sell them here?

The same company advertises the Yamaha 221 for $804.01 which is in line with the US suggested retail for that instrument.
for that $574.90 price on the Earlham, I would not expect the quality to be the best. I would look for a used Yamaha in good condition if possible.
