As a former (and now a visiting member) --- I thought you all might be interested in a site that features really great flutists in action: video and audio clips you can listen to.

Go to: http://www.flutecorner.com/famousflutists then scroll down to listen to video/audio clips of some really great players. I really like Rhonda Larson, Jean Baxtresser and Tracy Harris.

Enjoy!

Jim

I find this site very interesting:

Please do not misuse the thumbs down button. This post is not offensive and has everything to do with the flute.

Thank you!

Eric Ewazen - Ballade, Pastorale and Dance for Flute, Horn and Piano

<Added>

Would have been nicer if she put the composers on her page.

Generally, nice playing.

Her Bach BWV 1034 mvt 4 would have been more effective if she had maintained her initial tempo. I can't say that I particularly like the Kbd work on this excerpt. I would have asked the continuo to stick better to the note values that are written. I think that I'm more partial to the Woehl/ Peters realization but this version is interesting. I think that in the interest of maybe trying to imitate a harpsichord or trying to keep a balnce and lightness, a few kbd notes don't come out very well in the runs. Kbd was just a tad late in ms 38 on the 1st beat. I think that the flute should breathe less often after each of the longer dotted and tied notes (read: during their ends actually). The emphasis on the thesis and arsis actually seems to reverse in some instances of the note groupings as if the technical fingering issues are the all important focus in the flutist's performance. They could have done the repeats. ~not to hack at them because aside from these things I picked at, I enjoyed the overall fine playing on this mvt. I would have liked to have heard the third mvt. It's my favorite right now in this Sonata.

I wanted to add the following to my post on "Wonderful Flute Clips":

It's Maria Ramey's site: (http://www.flutecorner.com/famousflutits) --- and she is obviously very gifted.

You can hear her clips on the (left) side of the page.

What I thought you might be more interested in, is scrolling down the middle of the page, where you'll find "bios" of several flutists.

Not all bios have audio and/or audio/video clips --- some are just bios. I haven't looked nor listened to them all, since there are so many.

I should also tell you, that when you click on a web site on her page to "hear" a flutist --- be aware that these are MP3 files and can take a minute or two to download. I know -- I panicked when I couldn't "get a page to come up" -- but, be patient --- it will.

The three artists I found that do have audio a/v clips are Jean Baxtresser's page: click on "web site", then click on "discography" --- then, you'll come to "samples". I found her interpretation of Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun haunting and beautiful.

Rhonda Larson has a wonderful web site. When you scroll down Maria Ramey's page, go to Rhonda's web site: there are 3 or 4 a/v clips of her playing. One, in which, she is apparently conducting a master class. She's great! On that page (you have to hunt and peck and poke) you'll also find a link to Emmanual Piaud's (sp?) performances (a/v). Wonderful flutist.

Finally, I found another wonderful flutist who may not be a "house-hold" name, but is soooo talented: Tracy Harris.
To get to her recording clips, you scroll all the way down to the bottom of her web site: then look for the link: "recordings" --- it will bring up about 4 or 5 of her clips. You'll love her.

Any questions about how to navigate Maria Ramey's site? (http://www.flutecorner.com/famous flutists).

I'll help if I can.

Best to all: Jim
