I fully intend to buy my own copy of the music and I have ordered a copy through a music store here in Australia. It always takes them AGES to get stuff in from overseas and I really need to start learning the 3rd movement for a competition early next year. Just wanted to set that straight. Yep. Thanks

Well, that is a bummer that it takes so long. I just wanted to clarify that it is illegal to give copies of music away. I am sure you understand. We have so many people posting from time to time wanting free music, and we have to tell them the same thing.

I have noticed many requests for copies, but this is the first time I've noticed anyone pointing out the illegality (other than myself--and then on other forums, to be sure).

Anyway, if one wants to begin learning a piece before the music one has ordered arrives, one (one one leads to another; I should have know better than to start) needs to borrow a copy and then return it (without having copied it along the way). Has this particular one checked to see if a copy is available from a music library?

Yes, it has been pointed out many times about it being illegal to do so because of copyright laws. Flutist06 was usually the one to point it out. Like you said nothing wrong with borrowing the music though.

I'm very sorry, yes I am absolutely aware of the copy-right laws, I should not have even asked in the first place, however getting desperate I did post this and I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I've checked in 2 university libraries (there are 3 large universities in my city and the two I checked are the ones with larger music schools) for the music and in the State library and no-one has it I'll just wait for the order to come through.

The local university music library here has two copies of the score, one with piano reduction and one for full orchestra. There are such things as inter-library loans (not necessarily from here to Australia, though). Amazon.com says, "Get it [this work specifically] by Tuesday, Dec 4 if you order in the next 40 hours and choose one-day shipping," which may not apply to Australia.

Considering that the piece was first performed--according to the New York Times--in 1996, it seems to have caught on fast. Might be because there is a greater demand than supply for piccolo concertos.

Lowell Liebermann's Piccolo Concerto is unabashedly romantic. There are soaring string melodies that Mascagni would have been proud to have composed, and angelic piccolo melodies caressed by arpeggios in the piano and harp. The Presto finale, a wan evocation of Prokofiev in his clatteringly sarcastic mode, quotes Beethoven's ''Eroica'' Symphony, and also the main theme (turned major) of Mozart's G minor Symphony.

Jan Gippo played the solo part with command, but it was all rather trivial. Still, the conventioneers, recognizing a sure-fire crowd-pleaser, gave the performance a cheering standing ovation.

well, even if people object, doesn't make it right, I just had to pay fees to Carl Fischer Publishers for the rights to record several pieces for a CD, I did so because it is the law and the right thing to do, also, that way the composers get their fair share of any profit I make, if I don't get permission I risk getting sued.

you know, i have a hard time with this discussion. how is it ok for you to copy music at band practice, but not ok to copy music for a solo youre playing just for fun?

It is not okay either way technically according to the copywriter law, but everyone does it anyway. It is basically stealing.

Of course I'm not saying it's wrong to object. As you will have noted, I have already remarked that I myself have objected to this sort of thing at this site. I applaud you for objecting. My point is to support my original remark, which you seemed to me immediately to contradict.
