I have been playing flute in the school band for numerous years and I love to play, the thing is I hate and dread band pracrice and marching band. I play for myself, and I dislike the situations it places me in, although I do not mind performing. I dont know wether or not I should quit the band and persue my flute independantly or deal with it and give the teacher a hard time and a hard time for myself. I will not be able to get private lessons. Will i be able to keep developing my flute skills? Any help would be great. thanx

i would suggest staying in band, but if you are going to give your teacher of all a hard time, quit. Your teacher doesnt need a student to deal with that doesnt want to take the time to try. So if you are going to be stuburn and give every body a hard time and not try, like i said quit.

I would like to say thanx for being so friendly in your response, thats always appreciated, what I meant was that I wont participate in marching band etc, I ALWAYS give my all when playing my flute, Im not refering to not trying, obviously you do not understand the link between music and musician, I feel very capable of playing the flute without haveing to do things like marching band and be around people I dislike very much.

I used to be in the school band, I went for about 3 years, after that I just hated it so much that I stopped going, If you REALLY don`t like going, then I`d stop, but think to yourself: Is it worth carrying on for the sake of my music?
Iif the answer is yes then you should stick it.
BUT if you aren`t getting any lessons atall, in school or out then I`d definatelty stick, because it`s soo hard to progress on your own, you need a teachers helping hand to show you how things are done. I tried to go it alone and it fell to pieces, so then I began to go to lessons, it helps, trust me!

definitely stick with it.

Why do you hate marching band so much? I didn`t like marching band much, but flutes don`t do much in marching band, either. So I switched to percussion, only for marching band season... then back to flute.

And things are better now, because you`re second chair? Let me guess: you didn`t get what you wanted, and so you wanted to quit. Heh.

Just stick with it. It`s worthwhile. I know about being first chair flute, but I also know what it`s like to be last chair. It shouldn`t matter. I`ve had a few terrific teachers, and I`ve had some of the worst band directors there could ever be. And I`m glad I still love band; I`m making a career out of it. Stick with it unless all you`re going to do is complain and be difficult. Because that`s really inconsiderate.

And good luck.

what? it has nothing to do with what I "wanted" I was 3rd before, a person graduated so we all moved up. I don t care what seat im in really, but i was only trying to make a point on how when you stick with things they can work out for the better. and as for complaining, the only person I ever talked to was the teacher in private, I leave the other flutists alone. Thanks for your input but Im not that pathetic on basing my happiness on chair placement.

things are better now because people that make band unpleasant have moved on, not because ive moved up. youve misunderstood me.
