ok that i agree with but I don't know, and im sorry i was all jumpy on you, see i take this subject to heart, i like all flutes pearl, yamaha, i've tried them and like them and i favor the gemeinhardt though. and when I see comments where people say things about gemeinhardt is bothers me, and I kind of can not help it, and I think you can understand what kind of flute do you play? lol well i don't know but if people were saying a lot of negative things wouldn't you want protect your flute? I don't i do, so once again, sorry for being so jumpy, and I kinda would hope that the like against gemeinhardt comments would kind of subside since it gets me a little bit upset..sorry if i sound....i don't like stupid?

<Added>

Hi Everyone,

I just got back from a store that had the lower end Brios in stock. I guess the ones I tried the B10 and B20 are somewhat comparable to the Yamaha 361 and the 400 series with the offset keys.

They both had silver headjoints and I couldn't tell the difference between the two flutes when I played them. The B10 is plated body and the B20 is solid silver.

They are slightly cheaper than the Yamahas.

I had a Yamaha out at the same time so I could compare the flutes.

I am not experienced like most of you but here is what I found.

Maybe it is because I am used to my Yamaha headjoint, but the Yamaha had a better projection in the lower register. The rest of the scale they are comparable.

For some weird reason, when I was playing the Brio the low register was sharp and the high register was flat. (C above the staff) That just seems completely backwards. I tried makeing lip adjustments and headjoint adjustments and I had the same results.

The key action was about the same between brands. The keys on the footjoint on the Brio are closer to the body and they are smaller. I loved that feature. I didn't have any problems with my hands.

I would have loved to try the higher end models the B1, B2 or B3 but he didn't have any.

I don't know how the Brio would hold up over time, but I like it. I could probably learn to play in tune with a little practice with the Dana Sheriden headjoint.

I am off to try an Amadeus, a Sonare and an Altus this weekend. I might even try an actual Haynes.

Anyway that's my thoughts on the Brio.

Some of you flute pros let me know what you think. I would love to hear your opinions on construction. I would really like to know what you think of the higher end Brios. The flute is playable for me and I might consider it after I try the others.

Lana

I personally will not buy anything not being made in Japan or the US until they can make improvements

um. i thuoght you were gung-ho on both american flutes (ex: powell) and japanese flutes (ex: muramatsu). kinda contradictory. perhaps you could explain??

when i tried the brio flute, the mechanism seemed like the typical gemeinhardt mechanism. headjoint wasnt exactly top-notch either.

mbrowne, I am confused by what you mean by that. I thought I was very clear. No contradictions here. Please re read what I wrote.

You know what does bother me about the Brio line though, they want everyone to think it is a Dana Sheridan head on them when in fact Dana Sheridan is not the one hand cutting these headjoints, it is some other factory worker trying to copy his design. There can be quite a big difference in who cuts the headjoint. Just a though. I am very much looking forward to trying one myself along with the new Avanti line if there are any. I will be spending most my time piccolo shopping though. I plan on spending most of my time trying out Burkart and Hammig piccs. Oh yeah.. and of course filming Suzie trying out flutes! We plan on making a video together. We will let you know when we put it up on youtube.

Suzie!! Where are you? Tomorrow!!!!! EEEEEE!!! Friday is flute fair day! I am ready to leave now! It is so cold here!

I do have to admit to you guys. While I was trying the Brio, I grabbed a headjoint off of the Yamaha 481 and stuck it on the Brio. I actually am thinking that if I end up with one of these flutes, I might be sticking my Yamaha headjoint on it. It sounded better and projected better. I don't know if it is because I am used to playing on the Yamaha headjoint.

The tube on the Brio is quite a bit larger than the Yamaha.

I tried a sonare the other day. I might have gotten lucky, but it kicked the Brios Butt. I think I am getting a sonare if I can't afford an Altus.

I share the same opinions as Suzie on the Brio! I only liked the gold plated model best. I was disappointed with the headjoinnt though as it really didn't play much like a Dana Sheridan headjoint that I am used to. Still, it was a nice headjoint though and better then a lot in that price range. I was most impressed with the Lyric flutes that were in the same price range. They had a nice rich deep sound and nice solid mechanism.

There was so many fabulous flute at the fair and flute makers have really come a long ways. There are so many brands and options now that it makes it confusing at times on which is your favorite.

Sound wise, my favorite is still Powell. Mechanism and feel wise my favorite was Miyazawa with Brogger system and Nagahara.
Now if only Powell would start making their flutes using the Brogger system then they would be perfect for me.

I still did not care for any brand of gold flutes that I tried. I could always tell when someone was playing a gold flute also without even looking. I suppose that material is just not for me. The only gold flutes that I liked sound wise were a Muramatsu and the 9K gold Pearl. It seemed the higher the gold content went, the more it did not suit me.

Now my dream piccolos were either a grenadilla Powell or the custom Lillian Burkart. I LOVED them!!! Keefe was also there and they were nice too. I settled on a Global piccolo in which I LOVE! It was definitely the best piccolo there without breaking the bank. It was surprising because I actually preferred the more open sound of the Global to the next step up with the solid silver keys. I made sure there was absolutely no slop in the mechanism this time though like my last one had. I did notice that Lillian has made several improvements on them since the last time I had mine. Maybe someday when I am retired and rich (lol) I will get the custom Burkart or Powell. I just can't justify spending the much right now though.
