What is your favorite intermediate-ish type solo to play? I mean around the level of Mozart in G major, Mozart in D major, Bach in Eb major, Fantasie by Faure, etc. Basically, what are some good solos for college auditions?

those arent exactly "intermediate-ish" levels. those are very difficult pieces if you ask me... my favorite would be the hungarian fantasy by doppler. the suite by goddard or widor are nice as well.

THose ones you just put are intermidiate-ish, mrbrown. But for college.... I would say something along the lines of Image by Bozza.

this whole discussion about what is easy-difficult is an interesting, and very subjective one..for example, the Debussy Syrinx is not technically difficult, but is musically challenging..some pieces have lots of notes but are not as musically sophisticated, albeit fun to play..

as someone who has judged, I always like to hear something simple, to see what one can do with less...

I am relearning the flute.

I am finding it harder to play The Lord of the Rings in tune and well than trying to play the beginning of the Brandenberg Concerto. To me it is harder to play something slow with long notes than something moderately fast with a lot of quick notes.

Don't get me wrong. At this point I don't play either of them very well.

I just got a solo for a competition from my band teacher. It's called Airs de Ballet D'Ascanio by Saint-Saens and it's so pretty!
I wouldn't exactly call it an intermediate solo, though. It's a tough level six.

There are too many good flute pieces out there to just pick one. Some pieces that I like that might be good are "la flute de pan" by Mouquet, the Widor Suite, the Hindemith Sonata, the Poulenc Sonata, the Prokofiev Sonata or something out of the music by French composers book.

The solo I'm doing this year for contest is Mozart Concerto in G..

I haven't done a ton of solos on flute.. I did two in 7th and 8th grade, but I don't remember what they were..I've done several violin ones as we've been required to do one every year in orchestra.

I love Mozart's Concerto in G Major! The Adagio portion is so pretty.

I actually found out from a friend that the Saint-Saens peice I mentioned is being used as an entrance peice at some college, so if you want a college level peice it might be worth a look...

I'm non-conventional and like Irish Jigs/Reels/etc and so on. Most of those would be considered to be solidly intermediate level due to the timings and speed involved.

I really liked Polovtsian Dance from "Prince Igor" By Alexander Borodin. It would probably be really easy for a college audition, cuz I did it last year (7th grade) at festival. I think its a grade 3 or 3 1/2...
