For those playing on a pro or semi-pro level. What do you think are the top three piccolo choices and what are you playing? (to be used mostly in the opera pit).

The Lillian Burkart custom model, Powell kingwood or Grenadilla (I prefer grenadilla) and Keefe.

I own a Burkart Global only because I can not justify spending that much on a piccolo and I tend to sink more of my cash into my flute. If money was no problem I think I would have gotten the custom Burkart or Grenadilla Powell.

I know that Keefe has a waiting list of over three years, so you would either have to wait or try and find one used which is not easy.

I really like the sounds of Hammigs. Powell and Burkarts are good to.

I don't have the link in front of me, but I posted a while back about the disadvantages of wood as a material to make an instrument out of.

(found it)

In essence, there are dozens of issues with wood that aren't even a factor for metal. The good compromise is to get a wooden headjoint for your metal body, which is coincidentally what Bohem himself recommended. Yes, the wooden headjoint will eventually "die" in 10-15 years or so, but it's an easy thing to consider as a consumable and just buy a replacement or better one then.

the boston legacy is more expensive than the burkart global. i think the global is more picc for less money. but its very rare that you find these puppies used. that must mean people are pleased with their purchase...
