Hey, I thought it would be neat to locate some of you one Face Book. I have some cool "Pieces of Flair" about flute players that we could send to one another.

What would be the best way for us to find one another? You have to have a name or email address to search, so mine is Amy McKelvey. (Yes, I know some people do not prefer to list their personal info. online, but I really don't have a problem with it.) If you want to be FB friends, PM me or search for me and click "add as friend" with a message you are from 8notes.

I have a Face Book account, but I never use it. I only go on myspace as that is where all my friends are. You already know I am on there though Great idea!

Well, I guess I am going to have to go into my face book more often since so many of you have it!
You can find me under Kate Hanley or I think? Fluteragious.

You are free to post your names or other personal data, but beware this is not allowed in this site.

What? We are not allowed to post are names on this site? What if I used my real name as my ID, would that be not allowed either? I have nothing to hide, I don't really care personally. Everyone knows who I am anyway.

Geez, here I go breaking the rules... I can't see what the problem is, on Face Book you have to use your real name. Oh well, if they remove these posts, you all can PM me and we'll figure it out.

The problem is is that there are probably too many pervs out there. Why do crazy pervs and stalkers have to ruin it for the rest of us. I have a stalker guy, but he already knows my name. lol!

I am not commenting on the right or wrong of it; I just believe that the site rules forbid posting personal data. I do not know about using your complete real name as your alias, may be it is allowed though probably few would be interested in doing this.

I remember there were posts (Jim) that got erased by Admin because they contained personal data such as telephone numbers.

I am here since January 2006 and this is the first time I see your family name posted (though it could be I missed a previous opportunity) so it is not correct that everybody know who you are.

I do not think that there are more than 10 people here that got their names known publicly and the reason normally is they are active or renown in their profession (as artists or technicians) so they get known easily anyway.

If you revise older posts from about mid 2006, there was so much concern about concealing personal data that certain people would not even declare in what continent the lived. Other people moved to a new town and would not tell even the new area they lived.

This is not any critic to anyone; I feel we are all friends here and the safety of anybody concerns all of us. I remember someone saying he/she would not tell anything about where he/she lived because he/she had suffered recently an attack (got stabbed or something).

Unfortunately the conditions of the world we all live in have not improved in this time; may be it is all the opposite.

My post began with "you are free to post...", but independently of the rules, I do not think this is convenient.

When I see a coming wave of people willing to disclose names (and probably more personal data)in a open place like this, my impulse is to try to stop it by recalling the rules, not for the rules' sake but because I do not think it is a safe place to do such a thing.

This site offers the possibility of mailing diectly to the person and I have used this feature several times, transferring personal data without the risks of doing this in a pulic site.

<Added>

I will add that the requirement to use real names in Face book is one of its problems and for this reason parents are told (at least here) to control closely the use their kids make of that place.

We are no kids, true, but I would not like to see young students in their teens in this place posting their names or telephones or the like.

Understood. I tried to go and remove the posts with my name in them put I do not have the option to do that. Anybody know a way to accomplish this?

There is no way to do this unless you write to Admin and request it. (signal the post to Admin and comment it contains personal data)

But my warning was mainly to stop "the coming wave" I perceived. You a are not the only here whose name is known, so I suggest you leave it there and forget about it.

Point taken. It is kind of hard to conceal your identity when selling flutes on line. At some point in the past I guess I would have cared. But, the crazy people are going to find me anyway as long as I continue to post and sell flutes. That is inevitable. Like I said, I really don't care anymore. I am not a minor or anything.

<Added>

Amy, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

<Added>

I did see your added note about the teens. That is very true and I agree with that.

Kara, I have an on-line business too. I am a wholesale distributor using a home office, but I avoid publishing my address as much as possible.

People contact me mainly by Email or mobile telephone. Once the contact is established and if the case makes it necessary, I will provide the address and other data. But I decided long time ago not to show it at the WEB site.

I notice that mostly all EBay sellers act similarly and you may get a seller's address only after you have purchased (and received) something from it. EBay has a complex set of rules and procedures to keep safe the privacy of both buyers and sellers. We cannot reach that level of complexity, of course, but still some basic safety measures should be used when one is on the WEB.

If you feel curious about my site, PM me and I will provide the address. I wrote all the site code myself and I put in a lot of efforts to make it multi-lingual.
