My last phrase was indeed very unfortunate. But I appreciate your comprehension and thank you for it, Suzie.

the video has now been removed. I wonder what the punishment was actually metered out to them.

I can appreciate the artistic (for interests sake) merit of flattening a cheap or broken instrument and making it into art. But I am sure I would have found the wanton destruction of a viable musical instrument pretty hard to stomach. My children are learning to value and take care of their things - and other people's things. If my daughter took her school violin and flattened it - well she wouldn't sit down for a week. Despite the fact that I'd have some welcome silence without all that squawky bowing going on!!

I think if a classic car was destroyed, then car enthusiasts would have a similar reaction to that in the way we react to the flute being destroyed.

I did search you tube for "flute" and "destroy" and found a stupid kid wondering what effect a pair of hammers would have on a footjoint. Well duh. What did you think?

Hmmmm! But why is it suggested that only a broken or cheap instrument should be used to b made into an artwork. Surely it would only b a cheap artwork! Or does it depend on the reputation of the artist? Could a good player get a decent tone out of a cheap instrument or does it have to cost over $1000? $2000?? $3000??? B 4 it produces a good sound.

(PS My comment about ear rings was about Mitzi G. But I think she has been removed. On the wrong forum most likely)

When most of us speak of cheap instruments, we are speaking of the cheap flutes made of pot metal and are not possible to fix. There are many of them out there floating around on ebay.

Would it be possible to get a good tone out of the instrument? I don't know. I haven't bothered to buy one to try. I don't have a lot of money to throw away on a substandard instrument.

Maybe someone else here and tell you about the tonal qualities of such an instrument.

Most of us can get a good tone out of student instruments. They do not need to cost $1000.

I agree. I was thinking out loud. My student flute cost €135 (approx $160) Sounded OK to me. But maybe not to James Galway. But (I'm also an artist) if I were to consider making an art piece out of it I think I'd go for a better (made) instrument. But I switched to clarinet in the second year and I did spend $850 on it as I had decided to make this my instrument. And of course now that I am heading for my 3rd year I am considering getting a better one. But I certainly won't make an art piece out of my present Noblet.

I am sorry. I should have also replied to the cheap artwork comment.

I know plenty of artist who make art out of garbage. One of my friends made a chair out of bowling balls and scrap metal. A museum paid her a lot of money for what some people may consider trash or cheap art.

You don't have to have expensive things to make art.

It helps to have good tools. Having the right tools can make or break you.

Sorry, Ya too slow...it was removed by 11/11/08. Some HS kids running over an old marching band flute with a vehicle. They discovered that simply driving over it was not causing enough damage so they stopped the font tire on the flute and turned the wheel back and forth.

Cheap would be a subjective opinion. If Hirst used a flute in one of his pieces, then cheap could be a miyazawa. I'd still think it was sacrilege, I couldn't help myself! If the flute was a beautifully crafted and fully working instrument then why destroy it?
