You can get the head joints altered so they fit your current flute, no problem! It will probably cost less then $20 for them to do it for you.

When I got my flute, I had that done.

The only headjoint that will probably fit, for sure, is one made by Gemiendhardt and even then it has a possibility as not. The original EC headjoint I tried for my Pearl Dolce fit perfectly, but when I ordered one for myself it was too loose and I got it fixed.

< it may not be the most practical thing to put a top end professional headjoint on a flute body that is worth less than the headjoint >

Isn't that what you are usually doing when you upgrade headjoints?

If I am looking to upgrade a headjoint, I am not going to put a 2,500.00 headjoint on a $500.00 flute. A $500.00 headjoint on a $500.00 flute... maybe.

Personally, I don't think that I would bother to put a handmade headjoint on a flute that is NOT handmade. It seems like a waste and overkill.

But to each his own. If that's what you want to do then go for it.

If the flute is worth of, even if not hand made, a new HJ could improve it a lot. Normally one ends up with a HJ that costs at least about the same than the original instrument, but it can cost much more.

I have been searching for a new HJ for my Yamaha YFL 674. An intermediate sterling silver flute. Purchasing price (new) was about 2,400 USD

The HJ I was interested in was about 1,700 USD (DA silver Nagahara), but the proportion will be different as your original instrument is less expensive.

A way to explore is to try and eventually buy a second hand HJ.

I play on a Yamaha 211, one year this month playing the flute , But was told at a later stage to upgrade the headjoint to a silver handmade one, to give a better sound, then at a later stage again to upgrade the body to a semi/pro one. I guess moving up in stages??

But then you can buy the 211 with a silver handmade one already..http://www.justflutes.com/pages/product-detail20879.htm

If you're going to spend money, the headjoint is the place to spend it. I used a yamaha student 271 with a better headjoint for a long time before switching to an Altus body with the same headjoint.

The headjoint makes most of the difference, but if the flute body is not good quality and has a poorly designed scale or mechanics then you'll be fighting for your intonation on every single note and even if the headjoint is the best in the world it will still feel like hard work.
