I am looking at an Aurumite 9k Flute(Entire) by powell. It is used only a few years old, i am buying from a local store. It comes with a "Q" Cut headjoint. I was wondering what that is. The order of what i want in a headjoint is Tone, Projection, then Tunning. Reason being because my tunning is very good and i would rather get some more projection, because i can tune fairly well. So if anyone knows anything about this kind of headjoint, please let me know! If that isn't what i am looking for, i haven't tried there Venti style, so based upon my order, should i go with Venti or Solist if not the "Q".

Well, it used to be that the P cut was a Philharmonic cut and the Q cut was a Boston cut on the 2100 or 3100 (maybe both) series flutes, I think.

Anyway, the P cut is more like the serious rectangular cut hole (that I like better) and the Boston (Q) cut is oval. I think the oval's supposed to be easier for the novice to sound good on, rather than the rectangular, but I think the rectangular is the way to go.

I don't think that's what you want, but more people probably find that to be the easier headjoint to sound good on, so that's why it comes with that one.

Sorry I don't know about all these new headjoint cuts, but Powell's web site will probably help with the definition of Venti, Soloist, etc. Good luck.

I have a Powell Q cut headjoint. It's very rectangular, with a sharply defined riser. I have had mine for 12 years, and I love it.

I'm told it's also known as the "Boston" cut, although I'd always thought that was just where it was made!

I must say that was not my recollection, but I do know for a fact that the P (Philharmonic) cut is more resistant, and not necessarily preferred by the casual player.

WHy did they give the Boston cut a 'Q' anyway ?

My two cents, take no offense.
