Hi all, I have a friend who will attend an audition for flute but we don't quite understand the requirement for scales. Is there anybody who is familiar with this?

The requirements for scale are on Page 12 and 13 of the official documents on Central Jersey music educators association:
http://www.cjmea.org/auditions/IntBO.pdf

Thank you in advance!

It says you have to play all the scales 2 octaves (I'm assuming she could play some 3 octave if she knows any) but the requirements are 2 octaves.

Then for articulation she will either tongue everything or slur everything (I guess just prepare both ways) in eighth notes with a quarter at the beginning of each octave. They don't specify a speed, so have her prepare them to as fast as she can cleanly play them, but the HAVE to be clean and not sloppy. Playing a scale slow but clean is ALWAYS better than fast and sloppy

They also have to be all memorized, including the chromatic. The chromatic is two octaves from Bb (in the staff) to Bb two octaves higher (the one above the one just above the staff, lol. Bb 3)

The chromatic also must all be slurred in eighth notes. Again, have her play a quickly as she can CLEANLY. Have her learn it (if she doesn't know it well yet) by splitting it up into groups of fours. Have her tongue in groups of four and then increase the speed as well as eventually slurring the entire thing. Make sure (if possible) she can play this all in one breath as that will boost her score

Hope that clarified some stuff

to add...
the requirements are to play these major scales Ab, Eb, Bb, C, G, D, A in 2 octaves. Always keeping the 2 octaves between Low C1 and Highest Bb3.
The tonic note is to be played as a quarter note and the other notes are eighths.
For example. C maj. Start on low C1 as a quarter then eights up to 3rd space C2 (quarter note) eights again up to C3 quarter and back down, pausing on the Cs as quarters.

Also the Bb chromatic scale in two octaves. (Means to go from mid staff line Bb up to the very high Bb3) all played in eighth notes.

The rhythm patterns for the scales is specific but can be confusing.

As a technical point, generally the scales are to be played memorized up AND down. This rule book does not say this though and I believe that as a fine point, going in one direction (up) would be acceptable but that it's implied that one ends on the same starting note. Usually this sort of thing is for Solo and Ensemble (contest) around here and if this is the case, usually the performer isn't the first one. Visiting the judging area first can be informative as one can get an idea what's expected.
