Hi again. At county training flute choir I'm playing an alto flute. I have this on loan for free :P but I would like to know if anyone has advice on playing the alto flute. On my standard concert C flute, I've achieved a very nice sound, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to produce such a nice sound on the alto? Also, I find the alto flute very heavy, does anyone have any tips on how I can hold it to make my arms ache less? Thanks for reading.
Andy.

curved headjoints make the flute easier to hold. if the flute has one with it, use it. If not, you could always hit the weight room...

i know with clarinet you can get sraps to reduce the weight on your arms wether you can get a strap for alto flutes i don' know, but oif its your arms try a little weight lifting it will build up the strength in your arms.

with tone, do what you did to get a good flute tone.

I just got an alto flute this summer, and I love it. Good luck!

Long tones will go far. Focus on the E and F at the top of the treble staff. If you have problems with those not cracking, the second trill key will help them. However, it is just easier in the long run to get them to speak with the normal fingerings. I have seen some people play alto and bass with braces on their right wrists because it is heavy and awkward, but you'll get used to it. I guess that a curved head would make it easier, but I am 5'2" and play a straight head without any problems.

Have fun!
