Just wondering, I've got big thick lips, and I also have, I think, pretty bad sound I produce on my flute(I don't think there's anything significantly wrong with it).
When I make my embouchure, I tend to make the air hole where I blow air from inside to flute headjoint in the middle of my lips, and one thing I think is that my upper lip is protruded a lot (it's kidna weird if I look at myself from side). Also I tend to kinda put pressure on my lower lip on lipplate unconsciously because if I don't, I make worse sound. And I think as I blow my air, the protruded tip of my upper lip in the middle gets unstable and maybe vibrate a little bit. Should I try to tilt my lips so that my air hole would be located more right or left? I'm questioning this because I've seen a flute website saying a variety of embouchure can exist, I mean it doesn't have to be in the middle.

Also, my sound is very airy. I try to practice long-tone and fingerings in Moyse&Taffanel at least half an hour daily, but I wonder if my sound quality will improve.

I'd got flute lessons when I was young for like 5 years, but now I'm in a situation where I can't continue that, so I practice by myself. I'm just wondering if I had lost the correct embouchure, or this airy sound is just coming from the lack of practice. Any opinions? Thanks!

It's well and widely proved that the form (or the beauty) of the lips doesn't have much influence the quality of sound.
There is a site that unfortunetely I can't remember now where there are lots of examples of different kinds of lips that produce good flute sound.
The key, IMHO, is... practice, lots of practice. This means constant research and progressive building of the way you produce your sound. Takes years and of course patience and perseverance.
Believe me there are no formulas that could lead you to a success in this area, just because everybody is different.
Though, the accompainment of a teacher is very important. A more experienced person can show you better what is happening and what changes are needed.

on the james galway website there is tone master class, have a look at it, it helped me find a nicer tone.

There is a little confusion here.
Indeed different lip shapes may produce different tones. Besides, this is the reachness of having so many different ways of producing flute sounds.
What I said is that there is no relation between big lips or small lips and good or bad tone.

Oh sorry, I didn't understand before. I agree with you.
The kind of work someone with big lips have to do is very different from someone with small ones, assuming that both are persuing similar goals.

I have thick lips also, and have played a flute since I was 11. (MANY years ago.) I have also taught my neice to play the flute (who also has inhereted the thick lips). Initially, I had difficulty getting sound from my flute having the mouthpiece positioned as my instructor has directed me. (With the hole lined up with the keys.) I ended up with a very sore chin and mouth trying to pull my lower lip back and hold the flute tight against my chin to achieve sound. My resolution, was to move the hole of the mouthpiece slightly further out. This allows me to comfortably hold the flute and achieve a good sound from my flute. Although, I am not an expert, I would recommend you try the same resolution. It has been very beneficial for me. (I was 1st flute, second chair, so I can believe that I was the proper noise from my flute.) Good luck to you. I hope you keep it up. I have found that playing the flute can provide comfort.

Okay, I watched James Galway video but I don't think it can help me much as Galway has very thin lips (compared to me). The LarryKrantz site was where I ,mentioned in my question, saw different embouchures. I'd really want to get a couple of hour lessons to get this straight., but i'll see...

I've got a tear-drop shaped top lip.
When i first started playing i read all these things about how you will never play the flute properly because of it,,nearly put me off, but then i read the Larry Krantz site.
I guess it's one of those things, where because i have never played with a straight top lip, i don't know any difference, i just blow out off- centre to the right side,,it works for me..
