Hi
I'm in my school's marching band. I want to try out for advanced concert band and if I make it, then I will play the picc for marching season.

do u guys kno any good brands (and models) that are good? I hear great things about the Emerson EP3H2, so i'm leaning towards that. Gemienhardt piccs seem to have a good reputation and so do Yamahas.

If you know any other good brands/models, plz leave msg in forum. My price range is $500 tops

Most importantly, go for plastic, metal or composite. NO wood for marching!!

Yamaha's are great instruments but you will probably put up a fight with it to stay in tune! I have a YPC 32 and have some pitch issues, but I am used to playing it and I have a very good ear which helps a lot. I got mine new for $550.

Gemeindhardts, Jupiters are also good.

Definitely look for used piccs but be aware that they made need some work (especially off ebay) so that price into consideration

J.L. Smith - http://www.flutesmith.com

I've dealt with them a number of times and think they are great.

Flute World has one of the best prices out there. Also try Kesslers music. I would not buy a piccolo from a place like music 123 or ebay unless you know how to do adjustments on it or want to pay more to have it done on top of the original price.

do you play piccolo already?
i can tell you right now, i play piccolo and flute. mostly piccolo this year, though i just started on it in april. but my teacher keeps handing me piccolo pieces, and i love it, so i'm not complaining.
piccolo and marching band don't always mix. i play only picc in mb, unless it's like...crazy horrible weather. the school only has one picc, so i use an old flute if it's pouring rain.
if it's too cold out, the...i think my teacher said it's grease or oil...in the rods freezes up, and a few of the keys get stuck down. once it's frozen it takes a long time in warm temperatures to unfreeze.
i'm just warning you for marching band.

to answer your question,
i just bought a flute from someone on kijiji. it's mostly a used site, but as long as you talk to the people, and ask for pictures you should be fine.
i just bought a gemeinhardt flute, and it's wonderful.

lol. alright. that works.
it sucks. i'm in niagara, so winters are brutal.

good luck with the picc. i didn't even intend to start it. i was like "hey, my music that you gave me has picc parts on it. do you want me to play them?" and my conductor was like sure, here's a piccolo. i was helping in his grade 9 class at the time, so he had me try it out in front of all of them.
then like i said, he just keeps giving me parts this year.

unfortunately, i'm the only picc in our band. it's kind of weird sometimes if i come in and no one else does cuz they weren't paying attention or can't count and i'm really high and loud. but it's great.

It is no worse than marching with any other instrument. There is even more to ruin on a flute if you think about it.
