Does anyone have an opinion good or bad about this flute?

Its a good flute but it depends on what you are using for ? I know someone who has one and they love it but i havent played one

I have one and I am happy with it. But it can give much more than I can get from it right now; I am beginning my intermediate level and I believe it is not a flute for beginners. Its EC cut headjoint is great but not so easy to master.

My model has a B foot, something that is practically useless for me but adds unnecessary cost, weight and length. I had to choose this foot because of Yamaha's marketing policy in USA. And the extra roller on the foot adds some difficulty to play low C in my case.

The mechanics is very good and works well after two years use and no COA. I had some clanking noise on a key recently but it is now OK (if you want more details, I posted about one month ago concerning this problem)

If you are looking for an intermediate silver flute to buy, it can be good choice and anyway most flutes of this level are offered with this B foot in any case.

It is said that it rises the reselling value of the instrument; but I would add, at least while the trend lasts.

I have Yamaha 674 which I enjoy playing. Good reliable mechanism. The EC cut headjoint produces a good tone especially in the first two octaves but takes a bit more work to make the 3rd octave and above really sing.

When I first got it I struggled a bit with sharp intonation in the upper 3rd octave but read on the Trevor Wye and Jen Cluff websites that Yamaha headjoints are actually quite short in length and need to be pulled out about 12mm for decent intonation. Much better intonation once I tried this. Apparently true for Yamaha flutes in general, not just the 674, and certainly improved intonation on my yamaha 221 as well.

As an amateur I don't anticipate ever needing a flute any better than this and would recommend you consider a 674 among your choices.

I would agree with 'Kara'. Good flute to play on - a bit chunky but the scale is not so great. The internation is all over theplace on mine - the lectures at RCM couldn't get to grips with it either! According to Yamaha there was a batch made about 10 years ago that have all got similiar issues (just my luck)!

BUT if you want a decent intermediate flute that is reliable but nothing flashy and you don't want it for anything too serious, it's a bl***y good flute for the money and resale market isn't bad either!

i would say choose whats best for you, but try the equivelent flutes of other brands and make sure it is the one you want.

If I take out 12 mm on my YFL674 EC headjoint, I can play at A=422. The scale of course becomes difficult to adjust. I normally play for A=440 with the HJ out some 3mm /(1/8")
