June 28 - July 11, 2009
CSU Summer Arts
California State University, Fresno
This workshop will provide intensive instruction and masterclasses for flute students and guitar students. Repertory for flute and guitar will also be studied and performed. Course is open to flutists and classical guitarists of an intermediate to advanced level.
-Explore the possibilities of two closely linked instruments, the flute and the classical guitar.
-Each instrument will delve into solo repertoire through masterclasses with masters of their instrument – flutists work with flute virtuosos and teachers, guitarists with performers and teachers of the guitar.
-Collaboration between the two instruments is a theme of the workshop, and instrumentalists will attend chamber music coachings and perform together as an important part of the experience.
-Many aspects of music will be explored – 19th century classical, modern, and the experimental – to help the student find their own voice and manner of expression on the instrument
-The workshop will also feature an orchestral excerpts workshop (flute) chamber music coachings, flute and guitar ensemble, and morning classes on body alignment, yoga, breathing and technique.
-As diversity is the key, there will be lectures on topics ranging from baroque ornamentation and 19th century performance practice to improvisation and arranging on the guitar.
-Participants will give a public culmination at the end of the session.
