Okay, just to start off. I got a new flute, and it's not a classical flute, it's a bamboo flute. How do you find out what key it's in, and how do you peg out the fingerings, or is there already a chart for this kind of flute? Thanks.

I think that you (and we) need to find out if it's a Chinese flute, a Japanese flute, an Indonesian flute, an Indian flute, or whatever. There are MANY different kinds of bamboo flutes each with their own tunings (i.e., not diatonic tempered Western tuning).

The person who sold/gave you the flute can tell you if you are not sure.

Okay, with all the holes covered, the tuner says it plays A. As for the second octave, it will play it, but it depends on your embouchre as it appears there is no thumb hole. Before I got the flute, it was played by the vendor of the instrument who mentioned something about it being Japanese I think. However, the person I got it from works at the Renaissance Festival which is only here a matter of days. Thanks though.

It sounds like it might be in the key of A.

Go to this site. I don't know if you actually bought the flute from him, but he has fingering charts for all kinds of flutes. You might be able to find something that works.

Good luck.
