There are different things to love about principal piccolo and principal flute. What I would hate, is being 'cast' permanently into the piccolo role, and not be able to play some really lovely exposed solo or duet w/2nd flute parts ever.
I think the rotating is actually a very good idea, because everyone learns how to play each part.
And...if you are really heart-set on playing in a major orchestra, you will have a better chance if you are an amazing piccolo player (and a great flute player). There are sooooo many really good flute players out there, but very few actually concentrate on, and become exemplary on, the piccolo. That's too bad, because the piccolo played very well is really nice to hear. Piccolo played ok is not very inspiring, unless the whole orchestra is at a triple forte and picc is at the top of the range, and piccolo played badly is just awful.
