The braces really may be a difficulty factor in this case. The key is to be patient and practice carefully (and daily...) until you find your own way of managing how to overcome this condition.

i was just experimenting a bit, and trying the exercise but i couldn't do it because my braces stopped me putting the flute in the right place for them.

Everybody has a different shape to their lips. The position of one person's flute in relation to their lips will be different from another person.

I believe that micron said to find what works for you. He is right.

My teacher has very thin lips. I have very thick lips. By looking in a mirror, I have discovered that I actually blow just barely off center due to the shape of my lips. She places her flute in a different spot than I do.

Find what is working and the most comfortable for you. You are going to constantly be making small adjustments every time you play until you are finished with your braces.

When you get your braces off, you are going to have to figure out how to play with them off.

Just stick with it.

I wish that I had.

One thing I really really glad that I have really listened to Sir James Galway to do in flute practice is Scales!! He told us in a masterclass to practice scales daily no matter what, he said he had no secret of success but daily scale practice, in his younger days he practiced 2-3 hours of scales daily. After 1.5 years of my daily scale practice for 1-2 hours daily, I find I can play any piece now. I love him for that!!

I don't understand why he was not demonstrating his super fast scales in his American masterclasses? And he didn't mention this secret during the masterclasses, otherwise, he could have impressed many students in the US to practice scales daily.

I feel for you I had a ton of brace work all during high school! I just kept practicing and it worked. Also my mouth was constantly changing so you just have to keep at it. If the braces hurt I'd use the wax and that would help. I had an expander across the roof of my mouth which was a horrid 3 months of my life EVER and was able to play with practice. Hang in there!
