I'm interested in learning the flute. I've played trumpet for 5 years now and am very talented at it. I am also considering a career in music ed so I would have to learn the flute either way. How would learning it mess up my embouchure and how hard would the change be?

Playing the flute should not be detrimental to your trumpet embouchure. The reverse is more likely, but even that is debatable and some say that lip buzzing helps the flute embouchure. I was a music ed major and I find that playing any brass instrument tends to leave my lips a bit numb which makes it more difficult for me to focus my flute embouchure.

YMMV...

I can't speak for you, because I don't know any brass instruments (I tried, and failed. I can't do that, piano or most strings, hehe) but I don't think it should be a problem: I know/am learning flute (my first instrument), bassoon, clarinet, piccolo, bass guitar, and have had experience on oboe. My embrochure has actually consistantly gotten better, but fingereings used to throw me off. That probably wouldn't be a problem for you though.
Heck, go for it! I'm sure you'll love flute. If you can do brass , you must be uber talented.

Im an all state trumpet player, and i play the flute, piccolo, clarinets, oboe, and horn. (cant play sax for some reason)

I would say the worst thing for your trumpet embrochure is the clarinet, the flute ive noticed has never affected my trumpet embrochure, but I say learn it!!!

It is always fun to be able to express yourself with a different voice.

Plus if you can do it well, you get recognition,

last year I was in the back of the whole ensemble with my trumpet playing the stars and stripes forever, and i got to stand up and come to the front just to play the piccolo solo, because none of our flutes could play the piccolo. LOL

GO FOR IT!!!
:D
and keep us informed
