im looking to purchase the Reinecke Flute Sonata, but on flute world there are at least 4 different publishers of this piece.

also, there seems to be several..versions(?) or possibly interpretations of this piece.
Mainly, galway and Pahud play it sooo differently(and i prefer Pahud's playing for this piece).
Is that them just playing it differently( like they play some rhythms differently) or actually different versions by different publishers.

Basically, which publisher would have the version Pahud played?

This is a matter of interpretation.
For example at 1:27 section of Galway's recording, there are grace notes in the flute part. How should they be played?
Relative to this, using rubato and phrasing is a romantic notion. Is this what you don't prefer?
I think that if you learn to play this piece like either player you may appear to be very good but you may never learn to interpret music so much as mimic others.

So, my question is not an issue between one player being better but between either one of those players and the score. I'd suggest trying to avoid the concept of which player is better as if it were a competition. Leave that sort of thing to the youtube rock guitar afficianados. For example, if you never heard Pahud's version, does Galway's playing reflect what you think that the music should represent? then go to Pahud's version and ask the same question.

So in listening, both are nice performances to me. There is a difference in the recording quality which has a lot to do with their apparent tone quality as well. It seems that Pahud drops a few notes in the run at 1:28 whereas Galway doesn't. but at 1:57 I prefer Pahud's high G# to Galway's where Sir J. seemed to back off a bit too much from that specific note.

Rally, I'm not sure if there are differences in various publications but I strongly suspect very little.
I used the International Music version.

There are two free scores (Public Domain) here:

http://www.imslp.org/wiki/Category:Reinecke,_Carl

FOr the flute part, see page 30 with the Belwin Mills version,
But with these two flute parts, even the page turn places are the same.

It's a great piece that I always felt is sort of deceptive in it's difficulties.
