Hi!
I am looking at a Jupiter 711 and I was wondering what people thought of Jupiter! I am open to to alternatives, but only under $1,200.00.( about £750)
Please give honest opinions and don't be biased! Personally, I think Yamaha are overpriced and wildly overrated! Just my opinion! Please help!

Jupiter used to be the worst cheapest flute you could get about 10 or 20 years ago but from what i have heard they are a whole lot better now. I know Azumi, a Jupiter sub-brand is quite good. My friend has one and really likes it.

These are my thoughts on a Jupiter Flute:

First of all, Jupiter flutes are not very good for people who want to play on that flute for awhile. In other words, they don't last very long. But, if you take really good care of them they may last a little longer than most. It really depends on the person and the type of Jupiter flute. I know some people who love them... and I know some people who hate them. They are good for students. I would say if you wanted a good inexpensive flute go for a Selmer (Bundy). But, like Jupiter they are mostly good for students.

Gemeinhardt, Yamaha, and Pearl if you can afford it,
Yamaha lasts a long time and they are very good quality, i think geminhardt is similar and pearl is more high end quality

I personally don't like gemeinhardts, yamahas (Under the 500 models) OR some of the pearls but again this is just my opinion.

I would look into Amadeus, Demedici, Sonare and if you can find one, maybe a used Avanti.

Gemeinhardt is nowhere near the quality of a Yamaha. Yamahas are over priced. Jupiters are good and sturdy built in my experience with them.

Instrumentcrazy, are you for real? You are seriously going to recommend a Selmer Bundy? Please, get a clue before you start giving out advice.

I actually like the Yamaha 200 series. There's no real improvement between the 200 series until you hit the 500/600 series though. I don't like Gemeinhardts, Sonares, Azumis, or Brios. I think that Yamahas are a better option than these brands. I agree that the price of a new Yamaha flute is somewhat over priced but used student yamahas are really quite cheap $200-$400 even only a year old.

I agree with Oboelover4life. Any of those brands are good.

I can understand canadian's point as Gemy's aren't anything special, brio's are horrendously overpriced and the OLD Sonares were questionably made.
Though I have to say the new Sonare flutes are quite nice and much much better construction wise. And the Azumi flutes are consistently well made.

I find the Yamaha's below the 500 models, the CY Headjoint rly, to be far too restricting. I'm sure lots of people would and are happy with these flutes, for good reason as they aren't bad flutes. But from my personal experience, they are extremely difficult to play on. Less so in fact then on my gemy 2sp or my friend's 3 model.


So try everything and see what works for you.

I think that Jupiter flutes are wonderful! I sell used flutes and I usually only carry Yamaha and Jupiter. Jupiter flutes are ofter looked past for some odd reason. I am liking them more than a lot of Yamaha flutes that I have been getting in. Oboelover4life also said just about everything I was thinking too!

Well the HJ's are alright. Everything else is about right.

My private teacher has had his Jupiter for thirty years. The mechanism has gotten a little noisy but other than that it's in tip top shape. It has a beautiful sound as well. I would go for it.
